This one goes into my "most memorable gigs" scrapbook
Had a three-hour pub gig on the calendar, so I called up a friend whose wife was due in April to see if he'd like to play with me -- figured it'd be one of the last times he'd get to have some tunes as a "free man."
We're about two-thirds of the way along, and he gets the call from home: water's broken, time to go...and now I'm a solo act. This wouldn't have been that big of a deal, except I've been battling laryngitis the past few days, which makes singing quite an adventure. I had the bouzouki with me, too, although I don't think my zouk solos are particularly enthralling.
Fortunately, the folks who come to this particular pub are an encouraging and supportive lot -- I announced my friend's imminent fatherhood while he packed up so they could give him a rousing send-off -- and they applauded vigorously as I gasped and gargled my way through several songs and tried to remember the tune sets I put together for bouzouki. That last hour went surprisingly fast, actually.
Kids. Just couldn't have waited a little longer, I guess. Maybe we played too many polka sets?
Hopefully unnecessary disclaimer: I couldn't be happier for my friend and his wife, and wish them all the very best.

The day I came out of hospital with my first child I went to a session and she spent the entire time asleep in a moses basket under the table while I played

I also spent four hours dancing at a ceili 2 weeks before she was due! You'd think she'd be a great dancer and musician by now (almost 8 years old) but despite constant exposure and availability of instruments she shows no interest at all. Oh, well, you can't say I didn't try!

Was trying to rehearse with a depping fiddle-player as his wife went into labour - I was told in no uncertain terms by MY wife that the only thing to do was to send him off to hospital with her and let them get on with it, otherwise she'd never forgive him ( and me ). Hope this had nothing to do with their later divorce..........

God, Sinead. When I see the things that drip down from our session table, I don't think that would be the place to put the babby.
Sounds like she survived okay, though.

Sure, it's only a bit of spilt porter, and some dottle from the auld flute.......

Evit Gabriel would be appropriate by Daniel Thonon while he was waiting for his son Gabriel to be born
