Were these ever made in anything other than B/C or C#/D? I bought one on ebay, seller didn't know keys from smees. I don't have it yet and it may be months before I actually get it because I'm having it shipped to a friend in Ireland. I'll be there later this year.

I don't think the Double Ray Black Dot were made in keys other than B/C but there could have been Eb models. I love the sound of this accordion better than any other. They are sweet and have sufficient volume for all but the most rowdy session. Josie Marsh, a lovely player, still plays one.
There's a very good thread on it here: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/7203
I don't know why you didn't scout around the net to find out for yourself.
I think the Hohner Double Ray at "factory settings" is a great box with a lovely sound but you can supe these up no end to give you a fantastic box. Take a look at Martin Quinn play his Black Dot here.
He's stripped the celluloid down to the wood added Paolo Soprani reeds and adjusted the button travel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgN20aFjAWI&feature=channel_page
I have a catalogue from the late sixties early seventies. It shows as follows:
Black Dots.......
The Double Ray Deluxe 3 sets of reeds - Tuning B/C
The Double Ray - 2 sets of reeds - Tuning B/C
Both these have the black button for special tutor
No other tuning is featured with these instruments.
The Corso Model -3 sets of reeds - Tuning C/C#
Also available in C/F - G/C and G/D
The Erica Model - 2 sets of reeds - Tuning C/C#
Also available in G/D - A/D - C/F - G/C.
Poker Finish Model - 2 sets of reeds - Tuning G/D
Also available in A/D - C/F - G/C
(I paid £12 -00 for one of these new in the early fifties)

Re: Old Hohner Double Ray Black Dot?
There was a D/Eb (D/D#) Double Ray for sale a while back. The older body style more like a pokerwork, pre curved grill.

I used to have a D/Eb - old body style. As far as I know this was its original tuning.
