The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

Oh clangorous circle of obfuscating opinions ~ the useful, the questionable and the sometimes downright bizarre, if occassionally also a chuckle's worth... Pleeaasse try to mostly take this as seriously as I do. I need your guidance on helping some teens acquire the instruments of their passion. These teens are in England and Cymru/Wales, and it isn't a whim, they have a serious interest, are an inspiration, and they are seeking decent instruments, nothing that smells of camel piss ~

"B" for Bodhran ~ and, for one example, I've one lad who is already schooled in percussion, but also has a sense of melody, and experience with other accompaniment. So not an absolute beginner, not just another banger ~ so seeking a decent drum for somewhere between £100 and £200...

"UP" for Uilleann Pipes ~ Ah, the promise of youth, and I may even be able to sway this toward the flat sets, but especially away from the version of these that is akin to a piano accordion, loud and brash and in your face, you know, big bores, bit holes, loud like a traffic jam full of rude honkers... I'm trying to influence them towards just a practice set, but the interest in a half set is there.

So, please, recommend away, name makers, give websites or contact details, tell us something of what you recommend rather than just dropping a name here, let us know why you recommend said drum or uilleann pipes and reeds...

This is our future, young people with passion, see if you can help us to get them a nice instrument, one to meet their passion and help it to grow...

Enough of my wafflin', I've been out of things too long and there are so many new makers about that I haven't any experience with, so knowing you lot collectively represent a priceless treasure of information, if not always easy to extract amongst the, you know, pearls and all, but there's just so much collected experience here and no shortage of opinions, with and without basis, informed or not ~ enough of my twaddle, please help? ~ Pretty please? ~ With maple syrup and wild blueberries?

Don't think of it as me asking. I'm only acting in proxy... They're a lovely lot of younguns... They were too afraid to ask you themselves... 8-)

for the 'B'...
http://www.tradcentre.com/seamus
(Seamus O'Kane Bodhran....ye can't go wrong!). Not 100% sure of the price these days, but it'd certainly be at the higher end of lad's budget. Well worth it though.

Re: The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

You'd probably be better off asking about uilleann pipes over at chiff and fipple, but there are lots of good makers out there.

Joe Kennedy, Tim Benson and Stephanie Cornelius, David Quinn and Benedict Koehler, Seth Gallagher... These are all fairly local (to me!) and I've seen good examples of all their work.

If you're looking for sweet sounding D chanters, Joe's would be the best I think. Very flat settish, compared to the Rowsomish chanters from the rest.

Lots of makers over in Ireland and England though, so you should ask around.

Seamus O'Kane & Joe Kennedy ~ yes! Thanks you two... We have been trawling Chiff & Fipple...

Re: The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

For a less expensive, decent without being superb bodhran, try a Brendan White - but I mean try it - they do vary in quality, but can be very good for the price -upward of £150 afaik.
I reckon an O'Kane might be too dear, and I'm not sure Seamus is making that many these days.

Sorry - www.bodhran.nl
You'll need to find a local supplier and try them out - great skins, good range, good sometimes great build. Great value.

Best, and cheapest, drums in the world, as played by Bliss, and many others.

£120 for a tunable smaller drum, £140 for a standard drum, tunable. Excellent drums.

I second Joe Kennedy if you want sweet sounding, small bore, small holes. But I'm sure there are others over the pond.

Re: The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

Thinking of makers whose work I know and who won't have crazy long waiting lists.... I doubt your teen wants to wait upwards of five years for a chanter!

Tim and Stephanie have just started out and I have heard they are turning out some nice chanters. They may still have a reasonable wait list (although you never know with these things).

There is Gordon Galloway in Scotland, who makes very sweet-sounding sets. I've yet to hear a brash Galloway set. Not played one myself, sadly, but have heard a fair few and they sound great.

Also check into Jim Wenham in Ireland. I played a couple of his chanters at Willie Week and really enjoyed them. Again a lovely, sweet sounding chanter.

If Mickey Dunne's list is still open, he is worth looking into. My chanter, when it's playing well, is very light and gentle.

Re: The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

Google Pat Sky. He's a maker here in the USA who is making a very nice product for a very affordable price. For a serious quality "beginner's" instrument. you couldn.t go wrong with Pat

Re: The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

Thanks, I had, as usual, also checked past threads with decent results, but with things like this it is good to hear current opinions and recommendations... Open and closed lists, long and short waits, all are important when it comes to the pipes...

Much appreciated ~ and I'll keep checking back ~ 'c'

Aye, who needs the real thing when you have the virtual uilleann pipes right there on the internet! ;)

Re: The B & UP of contributing to the delinquency of teens

Pat Sky - I have an old album by him.
Funny how some performers have turned to instrument making; Stefan Sobell, the Brothers Dransfield at each end of the Southern Counties, Dave Bromberg, Pat Sky. Anyone know any others ( apart from me of course ).
