Birthdays: what a lot of Scheit. Invented to make the insignificant feel superficially the opposite every 365 or 366 days (assuming you follow the calendar of Gregory) and booster the purses of the Hallmark shareholders.
Just as bad as weddings, Xmas, Paddy's Day, New Year's Eve, Father's Day, Mothering Sunday and Valentine's.
Re: Krick's comment - who buys all those cards from Hallmark? The female of the species, in the main. If there were no women, Hallmark would be out of business ...
... but then again, if there were no women, we'd all be out of business ...
But the worst thing about birthdays impacts those who play in ceilidh bands. Usually attended by about 120 people, so a one out of three chance that it will be someone's birthday.
And the friend of that someone will invariably ask the band to play "that dreadful tune" - surely the worse tune ever written.
.. and the lyrics would't win any prizes for literature, either ...
Yes! We have the Amerikan colonials to thank for that dreaded bloody tune that all bands have to churn out for some over excited idiot at nearly every gig. Patty & Mildred Hill wrote it so children could easily sing it.
We always play it in four keys at once in different tempi, the punters still howl along...
Yes, indeed, Krick, a lot of us have been there too! I sometimes think it's well worth some fiddler taking the trouble to leqrn it in E-flat for these occasions.
The sad thing is that the bloody tune is still apparently in copyright, having been acquired by Warner, if I remember right.
At junior school (under instruction from our teacher), we had to sing it with two extra verses - though I don't think that these were part of the original composition:
Verse 2
----------
Lots of presents, so nice,
And a cake with white ice;
Happy birthday, dear X,
Happy birthday to you.
Verse 3
----------
Happy birthday to you,
Only one will not do;
Happy birthday, dear X,
Happy birthday to you.
... but with our teacher out of earshot, we used to thumb our noses and sing it deridingly to the "lucky" birthday boy/girl:
Happy birthday to you
Squashed tomatoes and stew ...
Thanks for the b'day greetings! I had a gang of thirty 6th graders sing to me this morning, then the 7th/8th grade orchestra played it...can't wait for that first cold one when I get home later on.

Useless fact #416: Did you know that you only need something like 15 people together before at least two of them will share the same birthday?

Lazy - you are right about the copyright.
I've often thought of using that as an excuse not to play it, but would one be believed?

Happy birthday to you,
you belong in the zoo,
you look like a monkey,
and you smell like one, too!
...or:
may you live a hundred years,
may you drink a hundred beers...
Happy B'day, all!
