Well, as we head in to *that* season, I could use some help thinking up ideas for some shirts for my tee-shirt store, which sells shirts aimed directly at Irish musicians (http://itmgoodies.com)
Anybody got any good ideas for St. Patrick's Day shirts that help us, as musicians, express how we feel about playing in the Green-Beer, Wild-Rover, Plastic-Shillelagh-laden season?
There's still time to get a few new designs done in time for St. Pats gifts...
A shirt imitating as closely as possible a pinky-brown, massively-hairy torso (belly-button and all other relevant features represented), with "McAlpine's Fusiliers" somewhere on it, looking as if tattooed. Maybe a Workman's Cleft printed on the lower bit of the backside.
It's only in the States ( at least, I hope it's only in the States ) they dye the beer green ! SO remembers being given green-dyed potatoes at school, and also Andy Irvine and Paul Brady playing a gig in New York the night before St Pat's, being advised by the compere NOT to drink the green beer, and being totally non-plussed by this, as it was their first time in New York on that date.
It's only the ex-patriats that make all the fuss.
What on earth goes into the green beer? What effect does it have on the physical, mental and generational health of the partakers? Have samples of the urban Irish-American community been studied and analysed in this respect? How do they compare with 17th-generation Appalachian moonshine-gluggers in the quality of their finer faculties?
It can't be good for them. Do they have green cheese and Swarfega sandwiches to go with it?
It's only a green dye, like you'ld use in other sorts of cooking, like confectionary for instance.
But, yes, what effect does it have ? I suspect that it affects all Americans unfortunately, because they all drink it on St Pats'. The foolishness of voting for Republican presidents, the current world banking crisis, etc., all can be laid at the door of the green dye !
So was Dubya a secret drinker all these years? Or was it bathloads of green beer in his frat years that did for him?
I thought the world banking crisis was caused by Bill Clinton and his horrible wife sending ACORN enforcers to frighten the bankers into making ridiculous loans to their client voters.
They were probably on green stuff, too. I bet he inhaled...
I saw one the other day on a website. I suppose that it's funnier here in the states than elsewhere (to some of us, anyway), but...all it had on it was:
You know, I've been avoiding confronting March this year, despite the welcome monetary infusion, however it is nearly upon us and I have nowhere to run.
That being said, I leave you with this tasteless blast from last year:

Show St. Patrick shredding a bodhran with a dazed snake, saying, "One down, ten thousand to go."
