Don't know if anybody will be able to help me on this one but here goes. I'm heading off this weekend to go on a walk across northern Spain and (after mulling it several times over) I've decided to bring my mandolin. I've searched the Sessions section and found the few sessions that are listed there for Spain, however, apart from one possible session none of them are on my path (like I say I'm walking).
So I guess my question is, does anybody out there know of any other sessions in Spain? Especially in places like Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Sahagún, Léon, Asturga, Ponferrada, Santiago de Campostela, or anywhere in between.
I’m hoping at least in Galicia I’ll be able to find some.
The names of a few Galician tunes that I might be able to look up would be great too (if anybody knows of any), I only know one or two I’ve heard Carlos Nunez play.
That's an amazing coincidence! I'm off to northern Spain this weekend and am bringing my mandolin! I've been in touch with Mike 'murfbox' Murphy about the Thursday night session in Bilbao which has been suspended for the summer. At the minute I'm not sure whether or not it will be up and running again by next week. I'll try and find out and get back to you on that. Otherwise, we'll just have to arrange our own rendezvous for a Basque country duelling mandolins type thang.
Go to Santiago de Compostela and look for the Pub " Casa das Crechas" you will find nice musicians there and don´t go to O´Neill´s cause is crap!
And if you want to came to Portugal speck to me !
Whe have a nice session in Séan the Fox
I´m just back from the Clonmel Fleadh and, before that, the Mrs Crotty weekend in Kilrush, so I haven´t had time to sort out when sessions here are going to start up again.
The Bilbao session is no longer. We have been playing, intermittently, in O´Connors Pub in Barakaldo, an industrial suburb down river and to the north of Bilbao, on Thursdays. We´re due to start again in September but haven´t finalised things yet with the guvnor. Shouldn´t be any problem though. I´m hoping our first session will be on Sept. 4th. Just as soon as that´s confirmed I´ll put all the info. into the "Sessions" section.
There´s a group based in Cantabria (Santander) called Atlantida. They play Cantabrian folk music as well as some celtic stuff. Their concertina player is an English girl called Kate and she may know of sessions in Santander or other parts of Cantabria. Send me an e-mail off list and I´ll give you her phone number.
Asturias is very rich in folk music and there are bound to be sessions in Oviedo or Gijón.
There´s a guy called Frankie who runs a very cool bar in Oviedo. All I know is that it has an Asturian name (which doesn´t sound anything like Spanish) and is in central Oviedo. There is music played there most nights and he always welcomes visiting Irish musicians. If you think you´ll be passing through there, mail me and I´ll find out more details.
There´s bound to be a lot of music in Galicia. I don´t have any details of sessions but they are probably in the main towns, Vigo, Santiago or La Coruña.
I´m sure Pitnekit will look after you well if you continue into Portugal so, what with walking and playing, your time will be well occupied.
Have a good trip.
Mike
Well this actually more promising than I'd expected, I wasn't really holding out much hope for anyone having much onfo. I'll e-mail you off list to get those details from you murfbox, and I'll definitely check out that place in Santiago de Campostela pitnekit, if I head down into Portugal I'll drop get in touch too.
Both Gontzo and I are from Asturias. Just leave a note if you are going to pass by. There's also a great festival next Saturday in Moreda de Ayer (30 miles away from Oviedo) and Flook are playing, so we will try to lure them to one of our sessions.
I´m currently up in San Sebastian. I´ve tried calling your mobile but only get a message saying it´s out of range or the phone is turned off. I´ll be in Pamplona on Friday. On the off chance that you see this I´ll be at the corner of the street called San Nicolas and the big square, Plaza de la castilla, between seven and eight that evening. Hope to see you there.
Sorry I missed you Paul, I have the mobile turned off most of the time as I only get a chance to charge it every couple of days, I got to Pamplona on Wednesday, and left on Thursday, I actually sent the mandolin home from there as it was proving to be too awkward to carry walking all the time, every ounce of weight makes a huge difference...
Hopefully we can meet up some other time and play some tunes.

Oraghalm, check in the "Sessions" section and you´ll see that Gontzo from Gijon has listed a venue.
