Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill

Thanks. This, for me, is what it is all about. Beautiful, poignant music.

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

I find it amusing that Hayes has a bow-centric technique. If you believe
superficial descriptions of the regional styles, this would make him
a "Donegal style" fiddler which of course he's not. Doesn't have a
Donegal style and doesn't come from there either.

Then on the other hand Tommy Peoples has a left hand-centric technique,
aside from the famous crunchy trebles. That doesn't fit those
descriptions either.

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

Many of the big icons of Irish fiddle have either technique or settings of tunes that set them quite far apart from the mainstream tradition of their locality. This came up in discussion last month during a session with Ged Foley, and then I think I read something else about it since then. Examples include Tommy Peoples, Tommy Potts, Bobby Casey, Paddy Canny, and Michael Coleman. And with Canny being a major influence on Martin Hayes, Martin probably fits that bill, too. Makes sense, too - the players who stand out and gain widespread acclaim do so BECAUSE they stand out, not because they are typical.

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

I too have met Ged Foley - a strong fiddle player who can lead a session
while calling out chord changes to the guitarists

Interesting stuff. Does anyone know when this was filmed?

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

"bow-centric", "left hand-centric". Can you tell me what these mean, Hup?

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

DavyDD - That video was pretty breathe taking!

Does anyone name the tune that he starts playing at about 3:12 through the clip?

Thanks

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

Do you play fiddle, reenactor? Then you'll know.

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

Reenactor, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume
you're not takin' the p*ss. My contribution to the tone of this site.

Mr Hayes relies much more on bow ornamentation then on
left hand ornamentation, therefore I call him 'bow-centric'.
You'll find some other fiddlers do it mostly on the left hand,
with rolls, cuts, half-rolls, etc. Others, like John Cullinane and
Gerry O'Connor are going full bore with ornamentation on both
hands.

Lovely link davydd. Love the playing but (is it just me?) it's a great pity someone didn't put a pillow under yer man's feet!
Podo-ryhthym (when done well) is grand too but that was just plain annoying!

Re: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill - From Clare To Here

Just watched the five Clare to Here Martin and Dennis you tubes. Nice stuff.
Interesting commentary by them too. A selection which kept going round in my mind were:
Martin:
Says he abused the music when he was young, playing it for money.
He feels like the modern version of the travelling people, except on a bigger scale, bringing the music to different partsof the world;
Recordings and t.v. programs of the music can never match the live version;
The Beatles were it, and always will be.
Documentaries are the antithesis of what the music is about.
The music is about the feeling.
The music isn’t just of Ireland any longer, it is worldwide.
Clare is his emotional home; Seattle is his postal address and email his cyber address.

Dennis:
Says he is working his way back in the music, listens more to Seamus Ennis for example, and will likely end up listening to the cylinders at this rate.
The music is world music now.

From Clare to Here and Back Again Thirty Times a Year, I guess.
The more things change the more they stay the same it seems.

Thanks DD for the reminder. I found the commentary interesting this round too. Martin seemed to have a bit more to say than on previous occasions. He was pretty funny too. Too bad his playing hasn' t improved.
