Im wondering if anyone could give me advice on the cheap practice sets of pipes on e-bay.Or if anyone had purchased them could i get feedback?The seller is saying a maker in scotland is making them.I have a strange feeling they are from pakistan.any comments greatly appreciated. thanks
eddie, they probably are Pakistani. Most cheap pipes on eBay are made in Pakistan or India and I'm afraid they're no good.
Ask for the pipemaker's name. The only uilleann pipemakers I know of in Scotland that are worth a damn are Hughes & McLeod and Gordon Galloway. There may be others, but proceed only with caution and the advice of a veteran piper.
Very, very best of luck to you. I started out piping in my early 20s, too, it's a hard time to do it but it won't get any easier later on. Years later (I'm not saying how many!) I'm getting on very well with chanter drones regs, etc IT CAN BE DONE, my boy don't give up!!
Eddie, take a look at www.irishflutestore.com. Doc Jones is selling Pat Sky practice sets on there. They may not be as cheap as the Pakistani pipes on eBay, but they're surely a far better investment. Pat Sky is a reputable maker, and Doc is a great guy to deal with.

In delivering what he promises on time?
In supporting/backing up his work once he has your loot?
Providing reeds if you choose not to make your own?
Doing upgrades if you go to a half/full set?
Your bio says your are from Waterford. Are there no uilleann pipers near you whom you could politely ask for advice?
Don't waste your money on a cheap practice set on ebay. The cheapest thing you will get that plays are practice sets from David Daye or Pat Sky or the Pipeworks of Boston guys (if they are till in business) for $500 or $600.
The best thing to do, as several have already said, is find a piper near you who can offer you advice and get you started on the right track. If you're in Ireland that shouldn't be a problem. Also, locate a tionol (a piping festival in English) and attend if you can. It's a brilliant opportunity to meet loads of pipers.

These cheap Pakistani/Indian pipe sets use a very low quality
animal skin for the air bag Yes the Hide are bad!

Good Advice, all. Find a piper and talk to him/her and get some opinions. Its not a solitary instrument. Find a tionol, go, listen and talk to folks.
