Taiko Drums

Taiko Drums

For ages now I've been wanting to add to the sound and life of my session by playing a set of Taiko drums. Or, even better, persuading a few others to join me, and we could have a Taiko drum group, with costumes and choreography and everything. I think it will be really good for the music, and the punters and the bartender, not to mention the other musicians, will really appreciate it.
Does anyone know where I can get a good set of Taiko drums for a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Taiko Drums

PS. I'm thinking of maybe including a set of Timpani in there as well, what do you think? Or will that be too much?

Re: Taiko Drums

Perhaps you should include a lambeg or two while you're about it. That should bring the house down, especially if it's not constructed strictly according to the current building regulations.

Re: Taiko Drums

If you include the odaiko then the lambeg and timpani wouldn't be required.

Re: Taiko Drums

I've invented a bunch of my own instruments (ala Harry Partch), mostly out of the junk from the ditch in front of my house and old motorcycle bits, and from a bunch of old galvanized iron pipe that was left over when I changed it all out for copper. D'ye think I coud bring those along?

Re: Taiko Drums

Make sure you leave time for running a marathon before you play (I think the Taiko drummers in Denver do that).

Re: Taiko Drums

I've got a copy of Taiko Drummer, complete with the drum control, for the Playstation 2, if that helps ;-)

Re: Taiko Drums

What? Costumes? I don't think there's much needed for that. =P

Re: Taiko Drums

You could also have a cannon aimed at the Guinness tap to signal the change between tunes.

I've seen these guys perform here in Oz.:

Not sure if i'd cope with them in a session tho.

Re: Taiko Drums

I like the way they eventually tore into their version of 'Bog Cotton'

Re: Taiko Drums

Couldn't be any worse than melody players stamping their collective feet, thereby setting 6 different rhythms.

Re: Taiko Drums

They are also some of the fittest people I've ever seen in my life... i'd be too embarrassed to be in the same room as them. :(

Re: Taiko Drums

Bliss - why do you keep pointing that out in every other one of your replys? Did you think that was a problem and you are saving the day with your toe-tapping-free drum playing? Do you think you solved the polyrhythmic problem, and the people who the occasion is actually for are greatful to you? Aren't there other session problems you are solving that you could be justifying your presence with?
