Sessions in Arran?

Sessions in Arran?

I'll be having my first holiday to Arran at the end of March. Anyone know of any sessions there please?
I have read Jeremy's instructions on posting this type of question in the discussion forum but have had no success with his suggested options. I hope I am forgiven.

Re: Sessions in Arran?

There used to be something at the Ormidale Hotel .... long time ago ...
In late Autumn, somone organises a Concertina weekend there, perhaps someone has the details of the organiser who might have the low down about any good music spots there .. and don't forget to visit the "new" distillery.

Re: Sessions in Arran?

There are a few nice sessions there, however, following this credit crunch I believe there may be a number of changes and such sessions as there are tend to be more active during the summer months.
The Ormidale Hotel in Brodick was a nice venue along with the Alderside in Lamlash. I do have a contact email address - PM me for this. Be warned though, it's a bit early in the year and they might not be doing much.
Nice crowd; the island is an absolute delight - you will enjoy!

Re: Sessions in Arran?

Some folk from the Edinburgh Shetland Fiddle group (?) go over for a weekend in August, I stumbled across them once in Kildonan and after getting chucked out of the pub we ended up having a few tunes on the beach by the light of the Pladda lighthouse. Great stuff.

There are some players on the island but I;m not sure about anything regular unfortunately...

Re: Sessions in Arran?

I also recall seeing some publications and a TV thing featuring Arran musicians. Have never gotten there. Tried last time but had several daughters in tow more interested in finding a nice beach to ride horses on....and enjoying the liquid refreshments in the Pubs ...

So we never got there.

Re: Sessions in Arran?

In '02 I had the pleasure of playing at a folk club, I think it was held in a hotel. They went around the circle and either sang or played a tune and everyone could play along.

It was a cracking good time and at the end of the night one of the guys pronounced me an honorary member of "skullduggery".

I don't remember the name of the hotel where this was held. There was a hand made sign somewhere along the road, telling when and where the folk club was being held.

The musicians were a whole lot of fun, and I wish you well in your search.

Re: Sessions in Arran?

Actually, I am looking at the map, and I suspect I was in Brodick when I found the folk club.
