OK, this is an odd discussion topic--but I've had a few beers tonight, and I doubt I can embarrass myself any more than I already have on this site, so here goes:
My TV set is on its last legs, and the sound comes on a good minute or two before the picture does. I have a satellite dish (I can't get cable TV, where I live), and it provides some XM satellite radio channels. So, while waiting for the TV picture to finally appear, I have started tuning to the Latin jazz radio channel. (By concidence--it's "channel 4 minus 1" which is convenient, when I can't see the TV picture. ) And I have enjoyed it so much that I sometimes just leave it on, and let the Latin jazz play for a while.
I don't know any of the artists, don't have any real desire to learn the tunes, just enjoy hearing it for relaxation.
I wonder if maybe I have been a bit too obsessed with learning the arcane details of Irish music--worthy though it may be--and lost a bit of that childlike joy in just enjoying pleasant, interesting sounds.....
Anybody else on The Mustard Board have a similar experience, lately? I suppose I'm hoping it translates into new insights into the music I'm still trying to master, at some level. Or maybe it's just some harmless fun.
I have the same experience as many times a day as possible.
Currently listening to a very sexy sounding jazz singer, she is arousing emotions that ITM does not
"I've talked to someone, regarded as one of the very top performers of Irish music today, who said he no longer enjoys playing sessions or even listening to other trad musicians for more than long enough to "get a taste." He said as far as listening for enjoyment, he mostly listens to jazz these days. When you understand an idiom too completely, it can become stale."
Good for him--although I don't think that's the case, for me. More likely, it's nostalgia. I went through a Bossa Nova phase, when I was a lad. (It was always in background, when the debonair international jewel thief was charming a bikini-clad young lovely at poolside, you see.)
I started learning Greensleaves by ear the other day on my accordion which sounded ok untill i found myself inserting rolls and speeding up it was at this point i stopped myself. No No crossover not good.
I can relate to the original post entirely. My main musical interest is diddly . It is a genre that can be all consuming. Finding expression within a boundary.
Its nice sometimes to get some inspiration and enjoyment from hearing or watching someone approaching music in an unrestricted way., especially on a similar instrument to your own. It can refresh the approach.

But perhaps I have said too much....

Re: unexpected musical pleasure
It's "Greensleeves" upmine3.
The white dresses of those medieval wenches became green after rolling around in the ryegrass with those medieval rakes.
(Hence the title).

Re: unexpected musical pleasure
Thanks for that, Mix. Just goes to show that, on this site, even the most oddball discussion topic can bring out some interesting bits of knowledge.

Re: unexpected musical pleasure
Indeed, mickray. I've learned plenty myself from this board. Either by asking a specific question, or by reading comments.
Loads of very knowledgable people are members here - far more on this board than on many other boards, perhaps.

Love this discussion. Anyone here listen to http://www.hober.com? It's a great way of gently discovering some amazing stuff.
