Just curious where the longest running sessions are.
I estimate it is possible for someone to have begun a session 40 + years ago & then over time
brought their children to play & in turn their children. Three generations of players in one session is not so unusual. This is more than a simple matter of fact. Dare I say it ~ it would be a tradition.
How many generations are you?
40 years ago is 1969 for those of you getting up in the years & having a hard time with the math.
Or for those who think 1969 is ancient history but suspect your session began before you were born.
The session i my town (Aarhus - DK), started in 1983 and is still going on every sunday afternoon. I was there from the start - and still I'm there..............)
Ceili, very nice!
Innocent Bystander, good question though. I can think of 5 keys of Generation whistles I have played. B & E flat, C, D, F, & G.
Oh! I guess 6.
So how many more sessions have been gong since 1983.
I'll probably get a YouTube response on that year as well
Cheers
More than once I have heard members say you are not fully immersed in the culture until you have played a session for a number of years. But how traditional is session playing? If there are few long - lived sessions. It is impossible to know since there are so few responses. Locally there is a session which began in 1987. Another one has been going since 1996. Many thanks to ceili for keeping one going 27 years. Thanks also, fauxcelt for including your session ~ 14 years.
Are sessions simply intermittent? Sessions play traditional music. Is the tradition in sessioning just getting warmed up?
Or do the long term session players just never log on?
I've heard that there's a session in Scotland that has been going for decades. Can't think of its name, but perhaps Llig will confirm if he sees this post.
Does Sandy Bells have generations of players. You know ~ children coming into the session. Maybe they grow up & leave town ~ to play in other sessions, of course. I don't know. Just curious.
Our comhaltas branch in Coventry is over 30 years old and has been teaching tunes and having sessions all that time, though the sessions have only been a strong part of that for perhaps 10 years or so I'm guessing. Two of our children have been learning for 3 or 4 years - I hope they're here in 30 years and hopefully their kids too!
McKenna, I hope you will be playing some banjo on Feb 9th; Super Bowl Sunday. I looked through your website, it's grand. Just like you said, every sunday since 1983, "we started to play at "Færgekroen" in Århus . . . Now we have moved again to a new irish pub Tir na nóg"
Fiddle Fi, I hope so as well.
Cheers!

Re: How many generations
Random - I've seen those Generation whistles offered for sale in various styles:
Blue mouthpiece, nickel-plated brass
Black mouthpiece, stainless steel
Red mouthpiece, brass finish
Green mouthpiece, brass finish
So, 6 keys, 4 styles - 6 x 4
I make that 24 generations!

Re: How many generations
- but I haven't seen all 24 Generations at the same session, though!

Re: How many generations
The local session here in central Arkansas wouldn't qualify for the longest running session because it was started in 1995.

Re: How many generations
I'm not aware of any generations at Bell's, but there has been music in there continuously since the late 1950s. And sporadically before then.
