Hey nicholas, I assume you're not joking. I'm not so sure about the Monkees but Abba have some brilliant melodies (yes I saw Mamma Mia, the ultimate p!ss-take girlie film and I actually quite liked it, believe it or not. Many of the tunes are boxworthy)
I'm a great admirer of Mikis Theodorakis, but is it possible to make for example Kaimos into a boxworthy arrangement?
If we're going all eclectic, I'd like to try more Tejano stuff like Flaco Jimenez doing Viva Seguin but I don't suppose I'll manage it this year especially on a DG box.
As for resolutions, I like the idea of

Other resolutions?
To get out more, to experience more the wealth of session music that this city offers, rather than sticking to just one or a few, down here in the anus londinii.
No, Alf Tucker, I mean it! At least, I wasn't being entirely flippant, whether I apply myself or not. I like nice MOR tunes with a bias towards cheerfulness, when they're good enough. And Kaimos would go very well on the D/G (I haven't tried it yet). Theodorakis wrote a lot of quite easy but catchy songs and tunes in Western scales - some have accidentals, but others don't.
(On the subject of song tunes, I remember a Northumbrian piper who used to do a show-stopping play of Joni Mitchell's "Clouds" in sessions...)
bazouki dave - I'm all for the Swedish tunes! Certainly if there are a lot out there as good as Tuolpagorni.
*Tucker*! ....? did you never read The Victor as a lad?
Yeah I agree - many Irish trad tunes maye be classed as catchy little C19th tunes anyway. Abba seemed to clock into and consequently perpetuate that tradition, IMHO.
Practice the concertina, learn new tunes, relearn old tunes, and make more food from scratch. Oh, and go to Ireland for concertina lessons. Any suggestions?
Alf Tupper - my mistake. I dimly remember Victor and Valiant, but not your character...Captain Hurricane I do remember! - I'd guess he was in Valiant but am not certain.
Ah, avoid resolutions, which, when broken, can only lead to self-loathing. Ernest hopes, however, are more realistic, and are somewhat optimistic, as am I. By way of wishing Health and Happiness to one and all this bright shiny new year, I humbly suggest drinking water, taking deep breaths, and stretching several times daily... and relentless playing of tunes... all of which make one feel grand indeed, and all of which are free.
Find a decent job.
Find a new place to live.
Finally get a good grasp on playing my guitar.
Learn more tunes on mandolin... at least one per week would be good.
Buy a nice tunable bodhran.
Logoff this board when some moron who thinks he's all that and a bag of chips starts slagging people.
Finally get an ITM session started here in Cloverdale.
Catch a steelhead on the Russian River.
Win a bass tournament.
And finding a new girlfriend with an interest in ITM would be nice too!
For a moment, there, Fishmonger, I thought you were from CLOVERDALE. http://www.cloverdalerodeo.com/
Never mind, at least you still have steelhead. Ours are nearly extinct.
A bass tournament is a contest where competitors try to catch a limit of 5 largemouth bass with the heaviest limit being the winner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largemouth_bass
Thank you Fishmonger. We do have fishing tournaments here on various rivers and lakes. I feel sorry for the fish and I keep hoping that one of the fish will pull someone into the water and eat them. I guess it would take a "Largemouth" bass to eat a human being.
I don't know if any of the American freshwater bass species have been introduced to UK waters; not that I know of, though it's possible this has been done. We make do with perch.
Nor have I heard of wild steelhead runs in the UK. Rainbow trout are farmed and released over much of the country, but I think only habitually breed in a handful of streams here. However, Atlantic salmon are bred specifically to be angled for in some lakes here, and for all I know steelheads might be also.
There were trout farms in Colorado which bred fish for the sole purpose of being caught. You paid a fee and they gave you some tackle and you'd fish in the wee pond at the trout farm.
Silver Spear, I was hoping that my one contribution would be my comment about resolving not to to make any resolutions but I seem to have allowed myself to join a discussion about fishing. I want it on record that I have tried fishing and I think it is Boring.

Re: New Years Resolutions???
What is "winning a bass tournament"?
Catching a lot of bass?
Playing a mean bass-guitar or double-bass or other bass instrument?
Singing with a winning bass voice?
Drinking a lot of Bass beer?
Or is it to do with Basketball?
Or is it to do with Baseball? Or any of a hundred and one other deeply arcane American sports?
Good luck, anyway.
