In the central valley of California, we say, "Turlock." There is even a city out here, named after a man whose name was "Turlough." Because most people had trouble saying his name, the phonetic spelling of his name was used to name the city. He was a wealthy land owner who was instrumental in creating a rail depot for commercial purposes in the area. A city grew around the rail depot.
