Anybody here spent much time traveling to sessions outside your hometown?
For 2009 I would like to hear some good session playing.
Would be nice to use my mini disc recorder. San Francisco has a few sessions.
Probably others along the coast. I have only made one session up north > Ashland.
I say listen because that is my main interest. It would be nice to play one (tune or set). If I get asked.
So far it is just a thought for the new year.
Thinking about April for Ashland. See you then.
We did a day trip with my Alaskan friend.
Chico >> Ashland >> home again.
bagels & lox & coffee at the key of C ~ a visit to the standing stone ~ then on up to the Black Sheep.
Cheers.
Cheers! You sound just like my friend from Alaska.
It's just a little farther. Let's go to the next big river & find a pub.
He would too, you know. He's a good friend.
The Sunday night session at The Starry Plough in Berkeley is still going strong. I was down from Seattle a few weeks ago and quite enjoyed this one. Supposedly starts at 7:30 (according to the fellow who answered the phone) but things didn't really get going until about 8:15 or so. Very welcoming session if you play a lead instrument, and tolerant if you play anything else (but expect to be relegated to the outer circle) and also singer friendly if you let Shay know ahead of time that you'd like to sing something. The oft-linked YouTube video of There's No One As Irish As Barack Obama was recorded here.
The session at the Black Rose in Santa Rosa is a good one though it's been years since I've visited it.
I've been working on organizing a session in my home town of Cloverdale. I've got about 8 to 10 people showing up every other thursday. The thing is, it's mostly folk and old time blues being played. If I can find some ITM musicians to show up, I'll add a ITM night.
In June 2001, the people at The Starry Plough in Berkeley on Sunday evening were kind enough and hospitable enough to let this foreigner from Arkansas sit in and make music with them although he plays an atypical, non-traditional instrument. Even though I was "relegated" to the outer circle that worked out just fine because I mostly play backup anyway. I didn't have any trouble hearing any of the melody players. The session leader really startled me when he asked me to turn up the volume a little because he couldn't hear me well enough.

Re: Northern California & Oregon sessions
If you get up a little further north, there's great tunes in Portland if you know where to go.

When I'm in the area, I always have a good time playing at the Friday afternoon session in Chico at Duffy's Tavern.

Thanks Fishmonger. I will definitely get to a few of those.
I enjoyed the MySpace & Friends for Ruth McGowan's Pub.
I'll stop in for a pint.
