im looking for some advice on uillean pipes please
Hi im living in waterford.iv been playin trad on whistles for a few years now.but lately iv been gettin the tickles for uillean pipes.I have the money to purchase a practice set but dont now where to start iv been getting mixed reviews about local makers so i just want to make sure i do the right thing.any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Re: im looking for some advice on uillean pipes please
I will redundantly add --- DO all of the above.
DO NOT try the uilleanns without FIRST having:
1. A teacher, or experienced piper to guide you.
2. A good set of pipes with a pipemaker RELIABLY available for support - there is nothing more frustrating than having your progress halted for lack of a reed or some basic service to the instrument, and noone to do it.
3.A LOTof patience and self-discipline. Neglecting good fundamentals at the outset will bite you later, harder than most instruments, IMHO.
Re: im looking for some advice on uillean pipes please
Basic maintenance is a job for the piper, not the pipemaker. If you don't know how to adjust a reed, don't touch it until someone shows you what to do. Once you know what to do, touch it only when it really needs an adjustment, leave it alone otherwise, it will last you that much longer.
I have learned the pipes in isolation, it can be done. Go to the Willie week or the like once a year, apply yourself and you'll be fine.
For godsake stop calling the instrument 'the Uilleanns'

Re: im looking for some advice on uillean pipes please
find a teacher or a mate that plays first - will save you many years of agony, not to mention a lot of money...
