I think what nicholas means is have you got a 1 row melodeon or a 2 row etc and what key is it in? Then we can give you suitable pointers when we know what you play.

Re: Suitable tunes for the melodeon

There is already a section here on the forum.
It is called 'tunes'.
All of these are suitable for playing on the melodeon. Some are easier than others.

Hornpipes that are easy on the one row in D are Harvest Home and Boys of Blue Hill.

Re: Suitable tunes for the melodeon

If you're a beginner, you'll probably find that some things don't come to you straight away. (Never!..) This is because (for one thing) it takes some time for your hands and fingers to develop the muscles, reflexes, whatever, to jab the buttons hard and quickly, and to make quick, punchy movements of the bellows. This is necessary to play fast or fastish dance music, including hornpipes - at any rate on the D/G which I play, on one-row, and I should imagine C#/D. I would have thought this was also true of the B/C, even though it's a rather different instrument to the others.

But Harvest Home and The Boys Of Blue Hill are long-established standards, conventionally played in D in sessions.

Well, Patrick JWK suggests the same tunes - our posts crossed!

Re: Suitable tunes for the melodeon

Buy some albums by melodeon players. Learn the tunes that you fall in love with.

Re: Suitable tunes for the melodeon

you can't do better than listening to bobby Gardiner (sp?)- look him up on Comhaltas or youtube. I 've watched a set he plays - introduced something like: "and here are a couple o tunes on the melawjun" where upon he plays three tunes brilliantly, hornpipe, jig and reel. Awesome stuff. That will give you a taste of the style you could be aiming for.

Cheers

Re: Suitable tunes for the melodeon

I was only trying to be half-sarcy.
I suppose, as a Channel Islander, I could be half Sarkie ?
