Davy Graham R.I.P.

Davy Graham R.I.P.

Sad news that legendary guitarist Davy Graham passed away yesterday. He had been suffering from lung cancer.

His contribution to folk, jazz, blues and acoustic music in general was immeasureable although he had a rather mercurial personality and his performances could often be a "hit or a miss".

He wasn't an Irish player, of course, although he did tackle and even influenced the direction of the music to an extent. For instance, the introduction of DADGAD tuning and so on.

Re: Davy Graham R.I.P.

really sad news...
but he was also a itm player, and a excellent one!. try only to listen harry bradley first album band where he played mandolcello. it is my favourite album- only three instruments, but....
when i saw his name on harry's album i asked myself is it same davy graham -guitar player, and latter my friend from belfast said to me that he is well known in n.ireland as itm player.
i think that he played also on rouguery road- cd with jason o'rourke and r. o'kane.

Re: Davy Graham R.I.P.

I was not as familiar with his work as Johannes, and probably others here, but he was indeed an innovator, and certainly helped to foster a lot of the cross-pollination between different genres and styles of music.
If unknowing imitation is the absolute sincerest form of flattery, add me to the queue: Over the years, listening to various guitarists (e.g Bert Jansch) I picked up bits and pieces of the DADGAD/blues picking he pioneered -- and I hadn't realized until I listened to some of Davy's recordings where in fact it had all come from.
My favorite Davy Grahamism was how he found that "She Moved Through the Fair" had a similar melodic structure as a certain type of Indian raga. I can't remember for which album he originally recorded it, but I do know it ended up on the splendid "Electric Muse" compilation, which is where I heard it. Amazing.

Re: Davy Graham R.I.P.

He bridged the gap between trad and guitar-based music very early and at a very high level.

To the very best of my knowlege, it is not the same Davy Graham from Bangor who you were just speaking of who died. I was just speaking to my brother Ruadhrai who recorded the album Roguery Road with Jason, and Ruadhrai 99.9% assured me it wasn't the same Davy Graham who has sadly passed away.

Still, very sad for the family of the other Davy Graham and his family.

Re: Davy Graham R.I.P.

Rest assured, Marin - 2 different Davys. I've met them both. Sad news about the guitarist who popularised DADGAD - he was a regular fixture at Scottish folk clubs through the 70s, and would always pull a full house. A true pioneer - RIP.

Re: Davy Graham R.I.P.

This is not Bangor Davy Graham who IS an "Irish" player. He is very much alive.

Re: Davy Graham R.I.P.

That's really bad news. I only just read the post.

Davy showed up at the Golden Lion session in London a couple of times; we were all gobsmacked.

A true master and innovator.
