I am the mother of a twelve year old fiddler, a seventeen year old fiddler and a 35 year old fiddler hubby.
What sort of music related (itm related?) christmas presents could you recommend?
Though I am related to so many fiddlers I do not know much about the stuff. Are there some fancy resins or strings or something? A good ITM method book?
My kids are both about intermediate level, hubby is pretty advanced. They can all read music, though the seventeen year old girl is not so good at that yet.
Time is runnin short and they need christmas gifts.
Any recommendations?
I have not used a website like this before and dont know really how this works. I suppose I will check back to the session tomorrow and see if you have commented.
Thanks irish musicians!
People, those were very weak Christmas suggestions for a family of fiddlers.
How about some great CD's like Brian Conway's "First Through the Gate" or anything by Andy McGann like Andy McGann and Paul Brady or Andy McGann and Paddy Reynolds. Or for something a little different, Kevin Burke's "Across the Black River."
How about a great book "Emigrants and Exiles" (Ireland and the Irish Exodus to North America) by Kerby A. Miller. Or if you like coffee table books, "Out of Ireland" (The Story of Irish Emigration to America) by Kerby Miller and Paul Wagner.
And finally, a DVD the whole family can enjoy "Come West Along the Road."
You can get the CD's and DVD's from the wonderful Irish fiddler and ethnomusicologist Philippe Varlet at www.celticgrooves.com along with other CD suggestions.
Someone bought me nice silk fiddle bag as a gift a few years back. It's not something I would have bought for myself, and that's what made it a nice gift. It matched my case, and it helps insulate (somewhat) my fiddle against temperature and humidity swings. It's beautiful to look at, and a conversation piece. Your 17-year old girl might appreciate it more than the other two, seeing as it's kind of frivolous and "pretty."
I know I'm pretty choosy about strings and rosin, so if you're thinking about getting those as gifts, you might want to sneak a peek at the brands they are using before purchasing anything. Or, a gift certificate to Shar Music is always useful for a fiddler. Shar has a lot of nice accessories which make good gifts. http://www.sharmusic.com/search.asp?SKW=CBCASEACCKEY§ionID=4
Thanks all, so much.
these are all great suggestions,
I am so excited to buy them stuff they never would expect from me!
Thanks again, so much,
Happy holiday!

Buy three bodhrans and improve your life.

Re: Gifts for a fiddler
Failing that, strings are always useful especially as fiddle strings are costly.
A new case? Resin, a few CDs/DVDs featuring fiddles, a new chin rest?
Or a new bow.

Re: Gifts for a fiddler
Thanks. Are there any brands of bows or cases you can recommend?
My nephew is a bodhran player, I'm much happier this way.

Re: Gifts for a fiddler
I got the Geantrai DVD, love it, and there is some fine fiddling on it.
And you can always use lots of sheet music and a good metronome.
Happy Rama-Hanu-Kwanz-Mas.

Re: Gifts for a fiddler
Fiddlemom - do not buy any rosin, strings or bow without checking
first -- you could be wasting your money. Buy some of that other stuff
instead.
I'll take the set of pipes if you're buying bogman.

Re: Gifts for a fiddler
I would but you a pint Hup but if you want a set of pipes I would consider selling a set from my pipe mountain for a slightly inflated price

Bogman
A practice set of Uilleann pipes - with keyed chanter - is what I keep thinking about, but it is not a high priority (especially with my wife!)
