before this thread gets deleted, maybe you know the answers to these questions:
1.) How is Jerry Holland doing?
2.) Did John McSherry get his pipes back?
3.) Did Siobhan Peoples find her Noel Burke bow?
I was going to ask about Brian Rooney too, but since people here have mentioned seeing him play recently he must be okay now. Thanks.
P.S. if someone wanted to start a Hollywood style news/gossip rag about ITM rockstars, I would never (officially) support it - but I would definitely read it while waiting to get my hair cut.
1) I believe Jerry's doing much better... rumor has it he was an instructor at the Ceilidh Trail School of Celtic Music this summer, and there is a "Jerry Holland Tribute Concert" next weekend at which he's playing...so it would seem to me that he's doing well.... just my assumptions, of course
Well, since you asked - much better thanks! I think the broken thumb helped my bowing in the end - I'm thinking about doing my pinky (just kidding - don't try any of that at home). How's the job situation?
A musician who is performing at his own tribute sounds like our patient who asked about the results of his autopsy. This man was mildly confused and had just returned from a biopsy.

Yeah, I thought that it was a bit strange that he would be playing at his own tribute.... when I first read the headline, I immediately thought the worst, until I scrolled down and realized that he was going to be there! Perhaps a different name for the concert is in order......
Tribute to Jerry Holland
Sunday December 14, 2008
7:30 pm
- at the Judique Community Centre.
. . . J. P. Cormier, Hilda Chiasson Cormier, Shelly Campbell, Marion Dewar, Buddy MacMaster, Andrea Beaton, Brenda Stubbert, Glenn Graham, Marc Boudreau, Dave MacIsasac and of course Jerry Holland.
oh no - I like sensationalism as much as the next, but in this case it's just a little to close to reality. Take that Frankie Gavin space baby headline for example - is that true???
Well, airport, think about this: Has Frankie Gavin ever _denied_ being the love child of Elvis and a space alien?
There you have it! Iron-clad innuendo.
David Holt, the fine collector, entertainer, and old-timey musician, has suggested that you can sing tabloid headlines to the tune of Camptown Races; they are usually pithy and scan well;
eg; Killer Fish in Airport Loo;
Headless Man in Topless Bar,
etc.....
So; not too many words, and you have the ultimate tabloid headline.
Pete, that is absolutely brilliant! Now I have something to amuse myself while I'm standing in the supermarket check-out line!
I'm particularly gratified at your citing the "Headless Body in Topless Bar" headline -- that one was done by our very own Boston Herald, and is still lovingly remembered as a fine example of tabloid journalism at its finest(?)
It doesn't fit the "Camptown Races" metre, unfortunately, but another US tabloid classic came from, I think, the New York Daily News: The day after the psychiatrist for John Hinckley -- who attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan -- testified at his trial that Hinckley was too mentally ill to comprehend his actions, the newspaper's front page trumpeted:
There was a headline in an Irish paper once that said (and I hope the columns line up well enough for this to make sense):
Towns Blow As
Bakery Jobs Go
I heard Rooney playing and being interviewed on Clare FM
not too long ago. Nothing was said about his health scare.
He's a very diplomatic fellow - wouldn't name his favourite
fiddle players. I'd love to hear him play with M Hayes sometime
- they both have a slight jazz tinge to their rhythm - very tasty.
Myself and a couple of other members of this site played along in a session with Rooney and the Carty bros earlier this year and Rooney seemed fine - his playing as ever was exquisite.
I heard Jerry Holland play last night at the Masters of the Scottish Arts concert in Seattle. He was, as always, great. He looked very well although he was limping a bit. He was playing with Andrea Beaton and the two of them had just completed the fiddle instruction at the Winter School in Port Townsend. Thought you would like an update.

You mean something like "Franke Gavin: Love Child of Elvis Presley and Space Alien"? "Sharon Shannon Shoots Six in Session Shocker"?
Or maybe this is what you're thinking of?

A while back, some colleagues and I were brainstorming about the "ultimate" tabloid headline, and the winner was this one:
CELEBRITY TOT DEAD IN COCAINE SEX BRAWL

Re: some mysteries (to me)
sts - add "with aliens" to the end of your headline and you've got it.

I haven't heard anything but John wasn't playing the Williams set at the William Kennedy Festival this year. Had a gorgeous K&Q chanter.

Not sure about Frankie Gavin being an Elvis love child but how about:
