One of my "emergency sets"... ie something I'll do if I'm put on the spot and asked to start a set of tunes..... is
The Point Road (3), Scarce O' Tatties(3), then Jig of Slurs(2).
It's "the Point Road" I really want to play but the next two are good for getting everyone else involved just in case it turns into "a performance".
That's quite a nice size of set and it's nice to finish off with JOS for a change although, invariably other players will just add on The Atholl Highlanders automatically. They DON'T have to always go together. ;-(

Re: Suggestion for 1st tune in set
you're guilding the lily a bit though
Athol Highlanders and Jug of Slugs are both great end tunes for sets
why not play a couple of fairly plain tunes before both and get two good sets

Re: Suggestion for 1st tune in set
hey yeah, that's a good idea. Pair boring non-discript tunes with the common ones to make them stand out.
Yeah, instead of just playing the best tunes you know, isolate those tunes and sanwich them between dross , for contrast.

Mary
Jig of Slurs and Atholl Highlanders are both overplayed at a lot of sessions on this side of the Atlantic - hence the errr. strange suggestions.
You really would do better to split them into two sets. Most people would only put them in the same set to get them over-with asap.
I'm not totally jaded and cynical yet so I still like the Jig of Slurs.

Re: Suggestion for 1st tune in set
Jig of Slurs is a Scottish pipe jig, and an excellent lead-in is another one, Paddy's Leather Britches
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/2161
It is almost as clichéd as the other two excellent tunes but that is no reason why you can't give it a bit of oomph and do it justice

Re: Suggestion for 1st tune in set
Great suggestions.
I agree about making two different sets with Jig of Slurs and Atholl highlanders but I was asked to play them together.
Thanks
