Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

Those of you with allegiance to the blue and white saltire and living in or near Bristol (UK) might be interested to know that there is a ceilidh this evening:

Thanks KML - Happy St Andrew's Day to you too!

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

We could do with a bit more of the cèilidh and dancing up here today - not to mention flying our own flag, rather than the one that raises our hackles...

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

What, nothing much happening in Argyle this evening, then Ron?

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

I'm a Plastic Jock since a coupla weeks ago, och aye. Drove through South London and up the hill past the Blythe on my way to Croydon at the beginning of the month, and thought about chucking a brick thru yer window, Danny, but I was in a bit of a hurry so it'll have to wait till next time.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

Naw Mix - not that I'm aware of. There's not much ever happens up here on St. Andrew's Day, but hopefully that will start to change.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

Nobody has ever been that much interested in celebrating St Andrew's Day up here although it's now a convenient bandwagon for The SNP and their cronies to hijack.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

I always thought the SNP were alright (unlike those tools in the BNP).

Happy St Andy's day to you all in Scotland and hope they allow you to fly the Saltire soon.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

The SNP are "alright" in that respect and they have nothing whatsoever in common with the BNP. They have completely different policies and, quite rightly, see the need to encourage people to come to Scotland.

Perhaps, SIP (Scottish Independence Party) might have been a better name for them but no...... why should they change their name because of the BNP ?

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

It does my heart good to see a lively discussion of patron saints and politics. Good to have you back KML. Stir the pot.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

Hope it's going well - but I hope the haggises are being slaughtered humanely, and have not been hunted with dogs.

How is St. Andrew's Day actually *supposed* to be celebrated? It's rather below the radar, compared to the festivities of Messrs. Burns and St. Patrick. I think we should be told.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

In all the time I've been in Scotland it's hardly been any more marked than the newspapers and radio mentioning it in passing.

There is a recent move to try to make something of it by both nationalists and commercial interests, a bit (but not quite) like the born-again St George fakery that various interests keep pushing in England.

I know that British consulates and Scottish organisations abroad celebrate it though, usually with a ceilidh or something

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

I bet they do, bren. If I was in some comfortable den of 'those who lie abroad for England' - or Scotland or Britain - in some genial climate, sipping my sundowner and watching the parrots fornicate in the mangoes, I dare say I would summon up warm fuzzies about this or that part of the UK that would be pretty divorced from the freezing, dark, sodding reality of actually being there, but might move me to celebrate its existence at a safe distance in a bout of pleasurable diversions paid for by the little people. (I mean the tax payers, of course...)

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

nicholas - if I had the real choice Id rather live in Scotland, but events are such that its not to be. Dont ask me why I moved to England, or even London, but then I probably wouldnt be able to resettle in a country with such a small cities such as Glasgow or especially Edinburgh.
I mean.
Where do you go if you get bored with Edinburgh? Dundee? You must be joking. Glasgow? Oh Puhhllease. Born in Shettleston brought up up in the Drum, so why would I wish to spend an extra minute in Glasgow? Oh yeah to hang about byres road so all the trendies might be nice to me..............................................................................Nurse!

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

Actually I was thinking of the freezing, dark, sodding, Moscow Embassy nicholas. And wondering how I could get the ceilidh gig ....

Danny, like all Londoners who go on about the endless variety and opportunity there, you seldom get beyond the local pub, now, admit it ....

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

My flatmates made haggis last night as sort of a celebration. That's more than I did to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. Being abroad makes me lose touch with American holidays -- the opposite of all the Irish immigrants who came to the States and celebrated St. Pat's with far more enthusiasm than they did in Ireland. Did nothing to celebrate the 4th of July, either, other than take a ferry to Larne for Willie Clancy Week.

Re: Happy St Andrew's Day

My other half insisted that we "do something" for St Andrews Day.

It was freezing cold but I ventured out just the same.

Firstly, we went to Sandy Bells for the afternoon session. It was very Scottish but this is the norm for a Sunday. Although the music was fine and most of the regulars were there, there was no special effort to celebrate St Andrews Day at all. Quite often, there are visiting musicians but this could happen any time and it was mostly the regulars yesterday. Still, it was good fun and I had quite a few tunes.

Anyway, we then went to the free gig in Princes Street Gardens which was surprisingly well organised and I thoroughly enjoyed ceilidh music from members of The Occasionals followed by a stomping set from Salsa Celtica.
The audience mainly consisted of tourists although I saw(only)two people I knew apart from those individuals in the bands whom I was already acquainted with to a greater or lesser degree.

There may have been other locals there but not many I'd have thought. Of course, visitors are very welcome but weren't we supposed to be celebrating as well?

Finally, mean Scotsman that I am, we went to a local bar which was offering a "2 pints for the price of 1" deal for Caley 80 /- and "enjoyed?" some live pub entertainment. Luckily, I had my ear plugs with me... :-)
