Naming the nameless

Naming the nameless

Seems discussions about tune names are flavour of the week. So no apologies for starting another.

At a rough estimate there are about 100 tunes 'Gan Ainm' on this website (possibly more if the words are misspelt). Two things: (1) (possibly for Jeremy) some of them have 'alternative' names - doesn't that make it redundant listing them as 'gan ainm', despite the fact they were originally listed so? Perhaps there's not much that can easily be done about this, and it's not really a big problem I admit.
(2) (for anyone) how about naming some of the nameless tunes? Is it possible the tune itself is suggestive of a name (as suggested on another recent thread).

Re: Naming the nameless

Perhaps you can give us the specific tunes you are interested in.

Re: Naming the nameless

A 'good practice' is to send an email to the person who had first submitted the tune as 'gan ainm'... Aside from Jeremy they are the only ones that can edit their submissions. Jeremy has had the grace to provide and maintain this website but it is really up to us to 'help'. If I find a tune I have a verifiable name for and it is a 'gan ainm' on site here, I send and email to the person who submitted it, and trust they will remove 'gan ainm' and replace it with the known title. I also, as I've submitted some 'gan ainms' myself, try to source a name, and also try to remember to review my 'gan ainms'. But, I sometimes forget... :-/

Re: Naming the nameless

The willy-nilly manufacture of names, mostly daft, is not welcome, at least not by me, and I know of others who feel the same. But, if you know a source for it, a known musician, sometimes, and only sometimes, it might be appropriate to name it after that source, like the many "Denis Murphy's" there are. A few 'daft' folk have taken to following your suggestion Lissagriffin, and been found out and I'm sure felt foolish when it proved to be a well known tune. Worse, when instead of 'gan ainm' they name something and then later someone adds the commonly known name and that remains in the 'alternate titles' while the silly invented thing remains in the heading... DON'T ~ PLEASE!!!

Nice link RN...

Re: Naming the nameless

"gan ainm" is at least honest. Giving it your own name is arrogance and an affront, IMO...

Re: Naming the nameless

ceolachan you are rambling again.
You do it well though. I bet you are already looking over a few gan ainms.

Re: Naming the nameless

I started running some of the Gan Ainm tunes through my abc tune search, and found some names for some of them... But there really isn't anything for me to do about it. I can put them in as other names for the tunes, I suppose.

Re: Naming the nameless

I suspected as much... ;-)

Yes RN, I regularly give the gan ainms a go... They are familiar, in that my mind too often works that way, full of gan ainms...

Bless all the gan ainms in the world

~ and those brave enough to submit them...

Rev ~ YES! ~ put them in as other names for the tunes. I then usually send an email to the person who submitted them and include a link back to their submission, reminding them that only they and Jeremy can access the editing features to update their submission.

RN ~ I only do that in a couple of sentences... :-P
