Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

I thought the Glackins and Liam O'Connor with Sean Mckwoen were great.

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

exactly what did it lack cflood? i fail to see what could be lacking in the glackins, sean mck and liam o'c, john feeley, niamh de burca, gay mck, paul mcgratten. please point out to me what was lacking because i thought it was a far better representation of where the geantrai was filmed than the 'kerry' one last week.

the only thing i will say thought is that the first set, and niamh's song could have done without the guitar player, who was a bit unsympathetic i thought.

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

And some of the musicians featured actually live in the Clondalkin area! There wasn't a weak link on the programme. The only thing it lacked was some pseudo ITM performances from some ex members of Riverdance, God save the mark!

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

fiddleruairi i think it lacked:-

1. A guitar player who amplifies his guitar and puts it through an effects processor to make the bottom string sound like an electric bass (check it out if you don't believe me).

2. Non - traditional compositions - shame on them relying on the same old tunes the previous generation played. And not a syncopation to be heard! Shock horror!!

3. Niamh De Burca could have moved around a bit more when she was singing to 'prove' she really means it. I mean wheres her stagecraft?

4. Tight arrangements. Sounds as though they put together those sets just the night before or something. They should have rehearsed a few good starts/changes/endings to keep the punters happy. Shame on them.

I am of course being sarcastic.

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

Thought it was mostly a good programme, though the best have to be the ones presented by Breandán O'Beaglóigh. They'll be hard to match!

I really do respect the technical genius of both Liam O'Connor and Sean McKeown but its not the type of style I would aspire to play or listen to on a regular basis. The Glackins were unreal, as was that quartet of Gay McKeown, Kevin Glackin, Paul McGrattan and Mark Kelly. Niamh de Burca sang well though I agree that it would have been nice to hear her singing on her own. Overall a nice programme but still far from the best I've heard on Geantrai.

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

No matter what anyone says there is a 'lackin' in the Glackins. Great music lads.

'And some of the musicians featured actually live in the Clondalkin area! '

I was told recently this series has nothing to do with the location.

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

I don't know what musicians featured are from Clondalkin but will take Maria's word. However as for location- well no it doesn't seem to have anything to do with location. There is an Irish centre which has done good work preserving and fostering the language, runs a Scoil Gaeilge and music tuition classes every week, regular sessions in it's bar as well as concerts featuring some good musicans only a couple of hundred yards from the the pub featured( which is one of your factory pubs), and one wonders why it wasn't filmed there???

Can I watch it somewhere?

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

Well I went and looked at the tg4 thing after hearing all this positive stuff, and lo and behold ended up finding myself watching last weeks....

I see what you all meant now. It was a bit naff. Stopped watching halfway through and checked out the week previous with Fintan etc. That was better. Though the sound was up to usual geantrai standards. Poor old Marcus - no-one could hear him!

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

geantrai is always filmed in a pub, and i dont think the pub in aras chronain is that big for filming something like that.

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

"geantrai is always filmed in a pub, and i dont think the pub in aras chronain is that big for filming something like that"- how big does it have to be to feature three or four players and a couple of listeners because that is all you see. The Laurels pub, like a lot of other Dubin pubs has no interest in promoting trad music using it only when times are hard, whilst Arus Chronain hosts and facilitates sessions and learning on an ongoing basis. In fact the bar in Arus Chronain has a lot more going for it than the Laurels. I have no involvment in either of these establishments- just an opinion

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

i used to teach in aras chronain and trust me the bar is small. its not just what you see on television, there's a whole host of equipment, bloody cameras on poles, lighting and load of crap that is plonked behind the lense. i was on one a couple of years ago in a pub in my county that i'd played in once, and where there was maybe a session every so often, but it was big enough, and had a good few areas where filming could be done.there were other pubs with more music, better music, but they were a lot smaller. of course id prefer to have it in more traditional pubs and the like but what can ye do!

Re: Geantrai from Clondalkin (Dublin)

Good to see Mark Kelly again though I'm not sure what Niamh De Burca was up to while singing. Dont think i heard that bottom string sounding like an electric bass. Ill have to check that one.
