Hello, I am living in Lille in the north of France and was wondering if anyone would be interested in getting a beginner/intermediate Irish trad session going. There are a couple around already, but they're either pretty advanced or more Breton style affairs. I play guitar banjo and bouzouki myself, all are welcome of course.

- it's a cereal!
Sorry, Kelloggs, couldn't resist that one. I tried - but the temptation was too great ...
... if you ever get back to those "Breton style affairs", you could always try playing: "Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" (Land of my Fathers). Those Bretons use that tune as their national anthem, you know. Failing that, tune your instuments to Bb and join in with those bombards...
I ve been to a session in Lille recently. It was in a bar called the Tir Na Nog near the solferino street in the city center. I play the flute and I only play old traditional tunes...
What drivel - French tap water is just fine. It's different, sure, but if you travel a lot you soon build up resistance to the changes (incidentally, French people have been known to get ill from water in England, too - even in Durham, I'd bet - shock ! I wonder if Durham has got any cleaner? Doubt it.)
Coming originally from the North east of England and now living in Northern France, I can happily say that Lille is a wonderful city, quite unlike Manchester (which is also fab - I studied there).
So Lille is great, French water doesn't stink (which may be why the French live longer and weigh less than the British but I have no proof) and Manchester is great too - how does this help the orginal poster? Oh hang on, it doesn't! What we were doing was showing how funny we were by playing with over exposed stereotypes.... Yawn.

I dunno how an innocent question on a session turned into a diatribe on French public hygiene and a scathing attack on my username, but for the record, I pump my tap water in from belgium and I was eating breakfast when I signed up!
Finally, Lille isn't France's answer to Manchester, it's earth's answer to Limbo.
OK, sorry if I annoyed; I'm glad Lille is seen by some, or many, as a very good place to live, and I would like to believe that my aspersions about its tap water are long out of date.
As for the Durham water - Durham City, anyway - I dare say quite a bit gets into the system via drainage from old lead mines, and stream-beds containing their share of washings and detritus from lead processing. The waterworks people presumably monitor for such things, but it might not be just the beer that makes some of us a few cards short of a full deck round these parts...anyway, it's nice soft water, you can wash your hair and make a decent cuppa with it, and it doesn't knacker up kettles and pipes with scale, which are definite plus points.

Re: Session - Lille
I got a nasty tummy-bug from tap water in Lille Station in 1972.
All the stuff about French tap water being untrustworthy was quite true, back then. And yes, it was definitely the water I got it from, nothing else.
I hope they've cleaned up their act in the meantime.
Don't recall much else about Lille, but isn't it France's answer to Manchester?
