As part of the Sydney Festival, Martin Hayes is presenting two concerts at the Opera House on 25 & 26 January 2009. Entitled 'Masters of Tradition - A living history of Irish Music', artists include Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, Cathal Hayden, Martin O'Connor Iarla O'Lionaird, Steve Cooney and David Power.
Just in case any sydneyites are interested.
In my experience, there's usually a near full house at the Sydney Opera House for a concert like that. It's just that hardly any of the people you see there time after time, go to sessions in Sydney, so it gives you a skewed view of how many people are interested in the music in Sydney. Going by sessions, you'd think hardly any, but it is not the case.
And Bridie was complaining before that no-one goes to Sydney any more!! That's a great line-up but how come they didn't ask Greenwiggle to play as well
It is a great line up and made me look to see what it would take to get to Sydney in January. Unfortunately, too much for us right now. But wouldn't you know that Qantas is having a two for one sale starting February 1st. Bad timing!
The ticket cost isn't too far off somewhere like The Basement (a nightclub in Sydney where Martin Hayes, Sharon Shannon and others have played before. There, I think the cost for a stand-only ticket is something like $50, plus expensive drinks, so you could easily end up paying more there than for the Sydney Opera House. It's always a memorable experience going to that venue as well.
I don't get that DD, are the drinks free at the Sydney Opera House? It is just possibly conceivable to go to the Basement and Not have a drink - nah , silly idea.
As for me being on fire - its Monday morning here and I feel more like I am under a damp cloud with the week stretching out in front of me.
Drinks are not free at the Sydney Opera House, don't hold me to that. It's just that from what I have seen there, because it is more like going to the theatre, the vast majority of people there don't seem to buy drinks. Maybe it's because there's only a twenty minute interval, like a theatre, and it just isn't possible to line up with two thousand people and get a drink and drink it in that time. I mean, would you really want to - it'd drive you to drink just trying to get one! The Basement is a nightclub, however, and most people probably feel like a bollox standing there without a drink, so most of them seem to have one anyway, for whatever reason. Maybe they want to look cool, I don't know, but then again, the bar is open all the time, including while the show is happening, so I guess you tend to buy more.
Anyway, it's all a bit academic isn't it, but I've always tended to spend less at the Opera House concerts than the Basement, for example, although who cares really.
The other important issue, I think, is that in my understanding, concerts like these need to have, under whatever regulation, a local act as well as the foreign musicians (not just in trad, but in any genre here). Steve Cooney probably fits that bill, but hey, there's a big chance Greenwiggle and a few mates maybe to get a gig with the big guys. That's if the place isn't too small for you, as you say.
