Re: Two melody players & four accompanists including a drum-kit and a bass solo . . .
I took a lead from the bloke who walked out past the camera at about two mins.
It reminded me of the one about the hunting party in deepest Africa, making their way through the jungle with their machetes, all dressed up in their light kaki shorts and matching jackets with lots of pockets. You know the scene, four posh white blokes and one posh white lady and 25 black guys carrying all their gear. And the big white hunter/guide at the lead with his elephant gun - he's a bit rougher than the other posh white blokes, but the woman really fancies him.
In the distance, they begin to make out the sound of repeating drums, faint at first, but getting louder and more insistent. Everyone's terrified, especially the porters (never really understood that one) who one by one drop their loads and scarper.
The big white hunter tries to reassure the party. "It will all be fine," he says, in his clipped South African accent. "There is nothing to worry about. We will all be OK, just as long as the drumming keeps going."
"... but ... b b b but what will happen when the drumming stops?" whimpers the white lady.
The big white hunter pauses for a moment, looks around, and whispers to the gathered party, "It's the bloody bass solo."

Sudenly he shouts "Don't move!" and fires directly over her shoulder into the darkness.
There is a thump, a splintering sound and a reverberation of loosely plucked bass strings ...

I remember listening to the moving hearts' persussion player (on the main pyramid stage at Glastonbury, glorious sunny saturday early evening - anyone else there?) do this thing with two shakers. In his left hand hand, shaking 3 beats accross the bar. And in his right, shaking 4 beats accross the bar.

And by the way: as much as you lot won't like it. the flute player payed on the soundtrack for the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films. There's money in them there shires . . .
Re: Two melody players & four accompanists including a drum-kit and a bass solo . . .
That three beats across the bar gainst four beats sounds like the third and last movement (a minuet) of a piano sonata by Haydn which one of my piano teachers made me learn.
In this minuet, there are several places where the right hand and the left hand are playing different rhythms such as two against three or four against three with grace notes as well as unsual and unexpected key changes to make you stay alert and keep you on your toes.

Accomplished players all, but boring arrangements and not for me! First CD release was nice though not so sure about the others.

It started quite fresh, a bit like Flook. Then it got a bit boring - and at the time the bass solo came in I lost my interest and closed.

llig, I heard another version of that joke, which has the punchline:
....when drums stop, piano accordion starts.....

Why would the PA start after the drum solo? That makes no sense. Christ, what a crap joke that would be. Honestly.

That was like Ron O'Burgandy on the Irish Jazz Flute, baby. I'm going to go break out my beret and bongos. That was way cool and hip, Daddy-O.

I actually have a beret but my wife won't let me wear it...
I'm surprised you watched for two minutes Llig. You must have liked some of it?

I kind of had it on in the background while I was trying to do some bloody work. Leave me alone

I'll never leave you alone my Lord Llig. You are my guide and teacher. Do you want a second-hand beret?

Great find joel !
I though it was pretty impressive, loved the bass solo, and the jazzy flute. They got quite a groove going.

As a dearly departed friend of mine would have remarked,
"it's very clever but is it music"?

Re: Two melody players & four accompanists including a drum-kit and a bass solo . . .
Someone commented on youtube:
"I see they like a little bit of melody with their rhythym."
This sort of stuff would have been an innovation in the early Eighties. But even then Moving Hearts were doing more interesting things.

Oh well. At least Jack and I will keep listening. Any offers for my second-hand beret? Llig obviously isn't interested.
