Looks like he'd more likely fit in at this "session":

Do you reach, brother?

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

Why, it's an electric shamrock.

"anyone shed any light on this?"

It appears to have a few on it already.

"and should you use it in a session?"

No doubt it could be a useful tool in certain forms of psychotherapy.

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

Is it not called a "Cloverchord"?

An electronic bodhran?

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

There are many names for it, including "elephant rifle target practice"...

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

I don't think it's an instrument, looks like a mixer or something.

You can hear samples of this wonderful album here (if you dare):

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

Ah, go on! Me Da would love it. Very clean sound altogether. I'd be worried about radiation being channelled up the shamrock stem to his face zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzap! however :-)

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

i have to confess, i already own the album.
i bought it in a charity shop,
purely because of the shamrock-synth.

i was expecting an irish Sun-Ra
i was disappointed.
ill give the cd to my mum.

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

How come that type of 'Oirish Album' always states 'Everybodys Favourites' Yet you guys seem to hate it?

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

What he's holding is, in fact, the missing bit of the Large Hadron Collider. I think he should actually give it back as thousands of Higgs bosons have gone undetected.

Gosh, he looks such a cheeky chappie, doesn't he? Has he collapsed his own eigenfunction, I wonder?

The album is called "50 Lovely Irish songs". Has he produced a companion cd called "50 Total Sh*te Irish songs"? I think we should be told.

Well, I hope he brings it along to the Blythe. There's far too little of this sort of thing, in my opinion.

Thanks

Max

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

"50 Lovely Irish Songs …
Wild Rover, Fields of Athenry, Maggie, Bunch of Thyme, Galway Bay
PLUS MANY MANY MORE!"

I love that last sentence, presumably included for the mathematically challenged ;-)

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

Well the first track is MacNamara's Band ... shure fired to get 'em up singing and dancing, Dub Chieftain ... and it is Irish music ... take it or leave it. Is it us who are being fussy? ... give him a break ... live and let live ... I bet there's a great market for it globally, much bigger than for Trad, and your mum just might love it :-)

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

MacNamara's Band, Eh?

"A credit to old Ireland", then!

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

dont get me wrong!
the CD is a good example of the Irish Party genre, but i was expecting some instrumentals with the mad shamrock thingy.

hes a good singer.
no Ronnie Drew though.

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

I remember years ago, back in August 1996, I was playing with an Irish country band. We were playing in a marquee on Aran island off the coast of Donegal. This gentleman was also on the bill. He was using the instrument pictured in the link. Of course I was fascinated and I immediately asked him to explain it. He had some Midi control stuff built into the body of the shamrock which he used for controlling his backing tracks and a vocal harmoniser.

I have to say he put on a great show and he was a thoroughly professional entertainer. I'll never forget that night. It was the coldest I have ever been on a stage. Despite it being August there was torrential rain and an Atlantic gale blowing outside. It didn't prevent the crowd having a good time however.

Re: what is this? and should you use it in a session?

The "accompaniment" on the album sounds like an old Lowrey Genie organ:

And I had no idea that "Down by the Riverside" was Irish...
