You mean a Clare band won? Now isn't that a big surprise! Pity Clare bands can't do better in the All Ireland Ceili Band Competition. Think there might be a connection here??
I could be wrong but I believe Clare have turned out three bands who have won the all Ireland title three years in a row, along with several bands that have been placed 1st 2nd and 3rd a number of times.
I think that is an amazing record considering the standard of music all around the country, but that is my humble opinion.
From her previous vitriolic posts I thought Maria had some sort of problem with the Trad Fest organisers but now it seems that it's County Clare that's her real target! London Lass, you're totally correct and the list of Clare wins down through the years are as follows:-
1954 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
1955 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
1956 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
1957 - Tulla Céilí Band
1961 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
1993 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
1994 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
1995 - Kilfenora Céilí Band
2001 - Ennis Céilí Band
2002 - Ennis Céilí Band
2003 - Ennis Céilí Band
This is a fantastic achievement for one county that I doubt will ever be surpassed!
Might the 2nd place band at the Trad Fest have been Ceoltóirí na Mainistreach?
Reading the Clare People today, results for the competition were:
1st - Corofin Céilí Band (Clare)
2nd - Ceoltóirí na Manach Céilí Band (Clare)
3rd - Dartry Céilí Band (Sligo)
And in case any sceptics out there ask "who is this new outfit from Corofin?", their leader is Pádraic Ó Reilly who also headed up the Ennis Céilí Band that took the three-in-a-row All Ireland titles. I wasn't at the competition but last year this band had the Healy Brothers and Siobhán Peoples among their number - maybe someone will confirm this year's line up. Also can anyone say who was the audience's choice as I'm sure this will be of interest to many of us.
Oops a typo for 2nd place - it should have read Ceoltóirí na Mainistreach Céilí Band who, by the way, are current Munster champions and also came third at the All-Ireland in Tullamore.
For your information Bannerman I have a problem with all festival organisers where money comes first and the music a very poor second.
Please see my comments re Cooley/Collins, Joe Mooney Summer School, Packie Duignan Winter School, Mick Duffy/Eddie Hoy festival in Derrygonnelly where music is a priority.
The fact that none of the above take place in County Clare is not a coincidence!
Maria i believe that the judges were not aware of who the bands were because they were made listen behind a screen. This makes the process much fairer. You are obviously bitter that your favourite Dartry Ceili band didn't win.
