The Sleepy Hollow Set???

The Sleepy Hollow Set???

I was watching the old Disney cartoon "The Adventures of Ichabod Crane" for Halloween last week, when I came to a scene where the Ichabod dances at a party to some folk music. As I watched it, I realized that the tunes weren't half bad, and I was wondering if they were invented for the movie, or if they had some roots in older trad music. If anyone recongnizes them, let me know.
Here's the youtube link:

The first one runs from 3:03 - 4:25 and it sounds like some kind of waltz (nothing special), but the second runs frm 4:25 - 6:15 and it sounds like a hornpipe. I think its very catchy, and similar to some tunes I've heard/know, one called "The Jar of Porter". If anyone knows anything about these, let me know.
I don't know if it helps, but if the movie attempted to be accurate, then I assume, as Sleepy Hollow is in upstate NY, that the tunes probably have English or Canadian origins. Thanks.

Re: The Sleepy Hollow Set???

Right. The first one'a jig, not a waltz, but I haven't got there with that one yet. The second one is a pastiche of the Rakes of Mallow - a polka.

Re: The Sleepy Hollow Set???

I've always enjoyed that cartoon. I'll have to give it another go.

I thought for a minute there that this was going to be a discussion about Johnny Depp...

Re: The Sleepy Hollow Set???

2nd one is more likely to be Winster Gallop http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3570
A veritable chestnut of a tune in english sessions

Re: The Sleepy Hollow Set???

Ah, spindizzy, I've listened to it again. The second part, which is played first in the cartoon, is, IMO, definitely the Rakes of Mallow. But, admittedly, the first part (played second) sounds a littel more like the Winster Gallop. Mind you, the first parts of those two tunes are ever so similar.

Re: The Sleepy Hollow Set???

Lovely tunes, but I couldn't help noticing a few things that are relevant to some current (and previously ad nauseum) discussions around here: a) the tunes are accompanied & b) the fiddler and pianist are reading from sheet music! Hee hee hee!

Re: The Sleepy Hollow Set???

Thank you all for the tips. Yeah, I knew I heard "The Rakes of Mallow" somewhere, I took a year or two of bagpipes and I think I learned it there. Does anyone know a good polka set that includes "Rakes"?

Ha! About the sheet music and accompaniment; true the troup in the movie is far from a true session, but at least its neat to see somewhat unadultered trad music in a movie without them having to put reverb on it, add a whole orchestra and call it something like "Celtic Fantasy".
