good site for buying trad CDs over the web /free postage?
hi guys
heres my query, if you buy a CD from cd.wow the postage is free. When you buy a CD in Ireland from any website (as fas as I know) you are charged a fortune in postage on top of the already expensive CD price. I presume UK & USA is the same. If there was a site in Ireland/UK that did NOT charge postage I would love to hear about it! CD.wow is no good for trad music, or, I would guess, for any specialist music.
FYI I want to buy John Cartys CD the Cat that ate the Candle. Prices seem to be around 16 euros + 2 e postage = 18e which is quiet a bit. of dosh in these days of recession...
Re: good site for buying trad CDs over the web /free postage?
I agree with you BanjoBongo. I recently went looking for a new DVD available in America on Amazon. DVD $16 international postage $12.95!!!!! ... and allow up to three months to be delivered!!! Now that is just ridiculous. I didn't buy. What is the world coming to?
Re: good site for buying trad CDs over the web /free postage?
I would guess that there must be a market (even if niche) for a music shop/CD outfit to sell CDs over the web, similiar to cd wow for minority sectors like trad music, classical, jazz etc. I for one would become a regular and loyal customer!
Re: good site for buying trad CDs over the web /free postage?
As someone who's posted many CDs from Ireland I don't reckon €2 for postage within the country is excessive (within An Post's somewhat inflationary scheme of charges). Most CDs weigh more than 100 grammes which means that the initial cost of postage is going to be €0.95, provided that one can find reinforced envelopes which fit the 'letter' category, otherwise it's €1.35. Add on the cost of a jiffy-bag and €2 in toto looks pretty reasonable to me.
BB's particular problem is that he's trying to track down an album released 14 years ago. Two of the most likely suspects (Custy's and Claddagh) would no doubt order a copy on request from Cló Iar-Chonnachta. Irish Music Mail - http://www.irishmusicmail.com - is only likely to stock fast-moving items and Magnetic Music in Doolin is only open between Easter and Halloween.
So, BB, sorry, but you're best bet is Cló Iar-Chonnachta - http://www.cic.ie - and the label certainly offers cheaper postage than its competitors.

BTW, in (and from) the U.S., according to the U.S. Postal Service, CDs must now ship as parcels, not as letters (due to thickness and rigidity). This change took effect last May 15, 2008.

Floss is quite right - I do a fair bit of postal sales and the last time I took my packages to the Post Office, they insisted on taking money off me to deliver them. Don't know what the world is coming to. Of course, if someone wanted to buy say 20 items, I'd be happy to absorb cost of postage..

Hang in there folks, you'll be able to download trad and any other music through ad-supported, artist-remunerating websites pretty soon...it'll make buying CDs and shipping them across the globe look like square wheels.

Try here:

I bought a cd recently and postage was only €1.95 and the cd was delivered within two days - great service.

i use the musicscotland.com or musicinscotland.com, not much they don't have, and reasonable with it.
