Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
I know, another ultimately pointless poll !
How would you answer the above questions with regards to your own attendance of sessions?
Our weekly bash is my only regular session; it's just under 2 miles away. I know some people go to many sessions in just one weekend, and others would readily incur hours of travel for just one decent session.
Comments regarding the pros/cons of attending single/many sessions also welcomed.
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
Locally, there are five sessions each month which I can participate in if I want to.
On the second and fourth Mondays of each month, I can drive one mile to the local version of Cregeen's here in North Little Rock for sessions.
If I am willing to drive twenty-five or thirty miles twice a month (on the first Thursday and the third Wednesday), there are two sessions in Conway.
And, last but not least, on the last Saturday of each month, If I am willing to drive for approximately ninety minutes, there is a session way out in the country in Hot Springs Village. Half of this drive is on a nice, new, recently-rebuilt interstate highway and the other half is on a narrow, two-lane country road.

sunday afternoon 5min walk for a 4 hour plus sssion (depending on attendees)
Monday night 5 minute drive
tuesday night choice 10 min drive or 1/2 hour drive
wednesday night 1/2 hour drive
thursday night 15 min drive.
regular at sunday and monday session .fairly regular at the distant tuesday one
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
I've got 2 a week within 15 min drive and a lunchtime microsession every
Fri that's a 10 min walk. Sorry ClearDrops. I have to ration my sessioning
though - my irish/scottish wife is a force to be reckoned with
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
I regularly go to 2 on Thurs. (afternoon/evening), 1 on Fri. evening, 1 on Sun. morning, 1 on Mon. eveniong, every week. Could do more, there's another on I could go to Fri, then leave to go to the other Fri, and another one Sun. evening.
I am a session addict, I love to get together with other musicians and make music. I spend probably 2 hours a day playing at home.
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
I organise two a month, one only a ten-minute walk away from home, the other 2 miles. Friends organise several others, a weekly Sunday night one which we don't always have the energy for, plus two eclectic sessions, one every Sunday afternoon, one irregularly but one Saturday a month.
None of any of these is more than 4 miles away from home. And I'm old enough to have a free travel pass, so I could go there, drink myself silly, and catch the bus home, if I wanted to.
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
Our group meets in homes on Sunday evenings, and then on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, we play at a pub. I have been driving 150 miles each way to that session. Makes for a long day at work. But, oh the fun we have.
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
I drive an hour and a half one way to attend a weekly session on Sunday night. I'd drive it every night if we had more sessions.
Have Goat...Will Travel
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
Two sessions a week for me, both about 3 minutes by car, or a 10 minute walk (if I'm not carting multiple instruments and the weather isn't sub zero). We also use to do a monthly tune learning session, but people finally got good enough at picking up tunes on their own.
I like playing with a variety of people--more opportunities to pick up tunes and hear other musical ideas. Also, one session a week isn't enough time to rotate through all the tunes I know and keep them fresh.
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
The nearest regular sessions are at least 350 km away. If going north, there's one every other Sunday. If going south there's one every Sunday.
It is really expensive to travel here because I don't have a car, and by car also, so I get to a session twice or three times a YEAR!
There are quite a lot of players near here, but they have been really passive and won't come to sessions. Believe me, we have tried, and are still trying..
There are four folk music festivals in this country in a year and two of them are at the same time(the ones specially for ITM) and the other two are mostly local trad music.
So I hope you never will be able to even imagine how envious I am when I read your posts. :/
Re: Your regular sessions: How Many? How Often? How Far?
my regular session is a 10 mins drive so I guess Im lucky, in comparison with some of you guys who have a long distance to travel for your sessions! - my regular session is once per week (Wed) and on average I would guess I go to anywhere from 2 - 4 sessions per mnth.
There are other sessions in town I could go to, about 20 - 25 mins drive, but I really like my regular session and also with lots of kids and a busy job etc just dont have the time to go to other sessions.

I have a session in my house the first Sunday of each month, and on the other Sundays I go to a session about 2.1 miles (3.38 km) from me. Sometimes I go to a Wednesday evening session that's .9 miles (1.45 km) away, and every now and then I go to the weekly Friday night session that's 3.9 miles (6.28 km) to the north of me. There's a bi-weekly Friday night house session that I haven't been to, and also a new bi-weekly tune learning session that I've been to twice. Does bi-weekly mean every other week?
