I live in Vermont in the NE USA. I am looking to buy my first button box. Can anyone tell me how the Paolo Soprani Folk II are tuned? I have a line on one that is supposedly B/C tuning, but most of the instruments I've found online list turning as G/C. Have they been made in B/C tuning? Any opinions on this particular instrument? I'm interested in playing Irish music. Many thanks!
They do make them in B/C. Any idea if it has a stepped keyboard? Stepped keyboards don't lend themselves to cross row playing as easy as flat ones do, like the old Paolos and such...
I'm just starting on the b/c box, and bought a Saltarelle "La Bouebe" model from John Williams. Seems to be a nice box for not a ton of money ($1400). If your line on one doesn't work out, look him up.
there are 2 types of Bouebe - Irish Bouebe with a closed flat keyboard, and just plain Bouebe, with an open stepped keyboard
the Irish Bouebe would probably be more use to you, although my own experience has been that the ones I've owned or played have had stiff bellows and tight reeds. Other people swear by them however
quite a bit cheaper and far less hard work is Hohner's Morgane wihch has an open flat keyboard, nice reeds and a keyboard far superior to Hohner's standard black dot model
I don't think John sells anything but a flat keyboard boube. You can check his website.
When I got my connemara it took some playing in, but it as a very smooth easy to play box. Also, I played a Boube that ohn had take delivery of-fresh from the factory last year. It was not particularly stiff.
The Boube is a pretty good value in that price range, especially given the ups mostly, in the ups and downs of the exchange rate in the past few years.
When I went to look at the Paolo Soprani I ended up much preferring the Saltarelle you're advising me on. That's going to be my choice. Many thanks for all of your advice!
