Sé Mo Laoch: Brian & Eithne Vallely - Sunday 22:00

Sé Mo Laoch: Brian & Eithne Vallely - Sunday 22:00

Brian and Eithne Vallely have been married for forty years and have been the two most important figures in traditional music in Armagh for most of that time.

As a young teacher Eithne met Brian, then a young artist and piper, when both were in Miltown Malbay to hear Willie Clancy.

In the years since then, they have taught thousands of young people to play a traditional instrument through their organisation the Armagh Pipers Club. All of this work has been carried out through the darkest years of the Troubles and with very little money.

Their lives continue to inspire all those involved in traditional music.

Some of my earliest exposure was the little booklet put out by the Armagh Pipers' Club. They still offer publications and I bet they are all worth having: http://www.armaghpipers.com/apc/publications/index.html.

I still have my original copy of Learn to Play the Tin Whistle though it is in tatters. I used it as a great introduction to Irish music. I also still have my original copy of Timber: The lovely Irish Flute Tutor, put together by Fintan Vallely.

Although I was never in Armagh I was one of the thousands who owe them a lot.
