I think my favourite has to be the "Acme Bird & Game Calls Duck Teal and Widgeon", although the "Acme Professional Dog Whistle 535 Silent" has distinct possibilities.
Anyone care to suggest how to play a roll on these instruments (without use of the dog)?
I can't believe that we actually played this tune 2 days ago, which must have been at least the 2nd time in 10 years! A guitarist friend started it off really slowly, but I soon put him straight...
Marklar, I play ocarina - I have a pair of ocarinas from mountainocarinas.com, and around a quarter or so of my repertoire fits on one or the other of them. I play them mostly at bus stops, but also at sessions. If you go here -
- and click on "sound samples", someone with more skill than I can be heard playing some Irish tunes, including O'Keefe's slide and The Red-Haired Boy (listed as the Little Beggarman), ornaments and all.
The little ocarina on the page Rick Payman linked, though, looks a bit like one I bought a few years ago - its range is so limited and sounds so shrill that I gave up on it pretty quickly.
Firstly, Mark, I apologise for replying in serious mode ... Dog whistles aren't silent, even the ones that are sold as 'silent'. It's just they're above the normal range of human hearing. I don't know whether this still applies, but I for one certainly used to be able to hear them. Haven't heard one for years. Is that because no-one's blown one near me, or because my hearing has deteriorated?
There's an Australian called Michael Jackson ( no, the other one ) who is a wizard with ocarinas - try and catch him if he's playing an event near you. Brought the house down at Towersey this summer - that takes some doing in a marquee !
Interesting new ITM wind instruments?
Interesting new ITM wind instruments?
I just noticed that the UK trad. music store "The Music Room" has recently introduced some interesting new instruments to it's Wind section: http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/index.php/cPath/294

I'll buy one of those silent dog whistles, and test it out on lazyhound!

Re: Interesting new ITM wind instruments?
So dog whistles are silent? That probably explains why you never hear dogs whistling.
