A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
My good friend, Chris Corbett (flute, whistle, fife, mandolin/mandola) has been working hard over the course of the past few months to put together his debut CD “Out Of Thin Air”.
The album is a collection of original tunes, albeit in a very traditional vein.
I have been very fortunate to have watched the project develop. The original 50 or so single tunes were whittled down and arranged in sets. Next came the addition of accompaniment, to check what would or would not work. Finally, days upon days in the studio and ultimately, the final mix.
Chris is only after phoning me to tell me that he's expecting the CDs to arrive today, in time for his CD launch on Monday coming (27th October, Camden Irish Centre, 7:30ish). (Christy McNamara is also launching his new CD and, as is now customary for the Monday night CD launches during the Return To Camden Town Festival, the concert will be free. You may, of course, find it pretty difficult to leave without shelling out for the two new CDs! )
I am a little partisan, but I would highly recommend “Out Of Thin Air”. Chris's playing is – as those who know him would expect – excellent throughout and he's supported superbly by Nigel Stevens (guitar), Christian Vaughan (piano), Jamie Smith (fiddle), Brendan McAuley (pipes) and his daughter Dilara Aydin-Corbett (whistle and piano).
Dilara's contributions (whistle on the hornpipe set “The Light Fingered Girl/Fairy Hill” and piano on the slow reel in the “The Green Fields of Canada/Killary Harbour” set) are a particular highlight. Her confidence, poise and sheer musicality are a delight and she's a credit to her father, who plays a very active role in her musical life.
(Already, on the basis of these, one eminent musician who is currently in the stusio has been in touch with Chris to ask if he can record a few of his tunes. Needless to say, Chris is delighted!)
My feelings at the moment are very like those of a friend of someone who's been expecting a baby. I can't help but share some of the keen pleasure that Chris – and all who have been involved in the album – must surely feel.
So ... anyone else had the pleasure of watching a good friend(s) putting a CD together? How did you feel when, eventually, things came together and the CDs were delivered?
Finally, hope to see a good few heads on Monday night. If you can't make it, I'm sure you'll join me on the night in raising a celebratory glass in Chris's honour and giving the time-honoured trad music salute “Hup ya boya!”

Thanks AIdan for the kind words. It would be great to see some sessioners on Monday. Its basically a free concert so come along & say hello!

Very mysterious indeed! The Brixton sesh is Gerard's session of choice these days. He had good things to say. As for posting again ... well, I had stuff needed sorting out for a while and it kept me offline for a long time. But gradually finding space to resume an online life as well as an offline one!
Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
It's really good.

Thanks for posting three whole tracks on the net. I've a lot of respect for bands/artists who do this, rather than just put out tantalising snippets - though maybe in the latter case it's record companies or other minders putting the limits on free material.
Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
Good luck on Monday Chris.
There is an "edge" to Chris's compositions. Just those little bit extra unexpected twists or turns to give the tunes some undefineable sparkle. I strongly recommend at least a listen.
Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
Just listened to the mp3s on Chris's myspace page - some very nice tunes there - I especially liked the last reel. It's easy to write a tune, but very difficult to write a good tune - and there are some very good tunes in these three tracks.
Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
As an amateur (randomly yet somehow wholly inconsistent) musician, I'm always blown away by anyone who can lay down tracks of clean, lively, lovely playing. Well done!
And the duets with daughter are thoroughly enchanting.
Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
Hmm... listening back to stuff I did previously, I do tend to cringe. I think I'll leave the recording to those with real talent. In the meantime, I'm quite happy to be a simple session-hack!
Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
hardly cringe worthy mate, i listen to them regularly, still picking up tunes from them and unfortunately for my friends , a few songs as well, blackberry fair being a particular favourite.
all the best
Lawrence.

Excellent concert last night. Fair dos to Chris for an ambitious and nerve-racking venture, and then for carrying it off with applomb and wit. Highlights of the night, his duets with daughter Dilara on The Light-Fingered Girl/Fairy Hill and Green Fields of Canada/Killary Harbour. Not to mention the grand finale ... Sir Hugh O'Neill/The Sperrins March ... with Chris on flute, shifting to fife for the second glorious tune and Dilara and Brendan McAuley on whistles, and Nigel Stevens on guitar. (And kudos to Christian Vaughan and Jamie Smith for their part in the other sets!) A lovely, warm evening at the Camden Irish Centre (in stark contrast to the bitter chill of a wintry London night).

Hi Chris. I enjoyed the myspace tracks. I'm afraid I won't be in London for the launch but I'll have to pick up a copy when I can.
Aidan - Good to see you posting again. I met a friend of yours (Gerard?) in Brixton a couple of weeks ago. Mysteriously, he seemed to be expecting me.

Where will the cd be available to purchase?

Re: A friend launches his new CD - it's been an interesting journey!
Not sure that Chris has finalised the distribution arrangements as yet. I will make a note here when he has "done the deal".

The best bet for the moment would be to get across to Camden Irish Centre on Monday night!
