Programme about The Chieftains tonight on (UK) BBC 2, 7-8 p.m.
Programme about The Chieftains tonight on (UK) BBC 2, 7-8 p.m.
Full Radio Times blurb:
"LEGENDS: THE CHIEFTAINS
'Profile of the folk band, often credited with reviving interest in traditional Irish music across the world. Featuring contributions from the likes of Keith Richards, Sting and Elvis Costello.
'Director Steve Crabtree; Producer Declan McGovern.
First shown on BB4 (S)."
(In bringing this to the notice of the inhabitants of the mustard board, I should add that I disclaim all responsibility for the contributions of Messrs. Richards, Sting and Costello, and any untoward effects these may have on viewers...)
Re: Programme about The Chieftains tonight on (UK) BBC 2, 7-8 p.m.
These programmes are always most interesting for their little bits of historical clips, and least interesting for the 'celebraties' brought on to sing their praises.
What meaningful insightes do you think Keith Richard brought to the programme ?

@Mix O'Lydian:
I don't know if it will be repeated, but you might be able to find out through the BBC website - it ought to have a request / query / feedback facility, though I dare say a reply from them might not be guaranteed.
I don't think you missed that much in terms of music - it was a succession of rather quick clips against a foreground of talking heads and anecdotes.
There were some surprises (for me). I hadn't realised what a brilliant pianist and all-round musician Derek Bell was. Garech De Brun - if I've got the name right - sounded and looked like an eccentric Anglo-Irish lord of a century ago, but it was he who got Claddagh Records together and played an important part in launching The Chieftains' wider career.
There was a clip of someone playing Galician bagpipes which showed how closely these look and sound to the Irish or Border Pipes - a comparable "feel" to the sound, anyway.

I couldn't find it on the BBC2 website.
I'm also having difficulties listening to the BBC on the net since they introduced theyir new iPlayer. It regularly shuts down Firefox 3.

Thanks for the info, nicholas. Like kuec, I couldn't find anything about it on the BBC website. Chances are though, that they'll repeat it on one of the BBC freeview channels in six month's time in the small hours of the morning, so I'll probably end up missing it again!

It was Carlos Nunes on the the Galician pipes. Too much chat and not enough music, but it was a documentary, not a concert. Lovely to hear that arch eccentric Derek Bell again.

I have always thought that a set of pipes would go nicely in Sweet Virginia or Faraway Eyes.
Elvis Costello and Sting on the other hand... I'd think they're too bloody boring these days to play with the Chieftains?

I wonder what they'll play...

Oh Goody. I wonder if there is a chance that we may also hear Van the Man doing a demolition job on Raglan Road.

Only that iguanas find 9/8 difficult to grasp.
All too brief clips of the Bothies.

Nicholas - didn't spot your post in time, and thus missed most of it - will it be repeated, and if so when, do you happen to know?
Caught the Keith Richards bit though (unfortunately) - "Stoned" out of his mind?

Here's a link to the iplayer of this - presumably it'll be available till next monday (28th Oct 2008)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0094zrm/b0094zqk/Legends_The_Chieftains/
I believe these things are only available to the UK (and you need luck, a following wind and a fast download speed and not linux!)
