Amp accident and three finger box

Amp accident and three finger box

So, our foldback amp tried to leap to its death whilst we were loading up gear for a ceilidh. I half caught it with one hand, wrenching my right hand little finger in the process. I mainly play fiddle, so no immediate prob.

Okay, you don't need to know all that, but when it came to practicing button accordion, I've heard all the stuff about how you should play with three fingers, but for whatever reason I've ignored it. (Haven't been playing box for long.)
Anyway, forced to play three fingered, I have to admit there's something in it. Can't quite say what it is, but it feels "stronger," "more secure," rhythm may be better etc.

I still don't intend to be a three-finger purist (!) but reckon I'll plan to learn tunes that way now on.

A happy accident? We'll see.
(Finger is doing okay, kind of you to ask.)

Re: Amp accident and three finger box

Ouch! I wish your little finger a speedy recovery. If you can learn to do with three fingers what you used to do with four, then just imagine what you'll be able to do when you regain the use of the fourth one. ;-)

A few years ago, I had a run-in with a table saw and lost a little of the tip of my left-hand little finger (It doesn't bear thinking about, how much worse it might have been...) - a major inconvenience for a mandolin player . After a brief, somewhat half-hearted, attempt at learning the harmonica, I discovered that it wasn't that difficult to play the mandolin three-fingered, skipping the middle finger. I played this way for almost a year (no doubt, causing offence to many an onlooker, with my permanent one-fingered salute). It was a bit of a strain on the hand and it could get a bit painful after playing for prolonged periods, but it did wonders for strengthening my little finger, and for improving my flexibility of fingering. Once my middle finger was back in service, I would still periodically revert to my three-fingered technique, as the newly healed fingertip was still a bit tender. But, all in all, I feel it made me a better mandolin player.

That said, I don't recommend circular saws or falling foldbacks as a means to better musicianship.

Re: Amp accident and three finger box

I treat my bandsaw with lots of respect, but table saws seem pretty scary to me.
Nice at a price - http://www.sawstop.com/

Glad all came out okay in the end ragaman!

Re: Amp accident and three finger box

I sooner use a table knife.

Re: Amp accident and three finger box

Sorry for the pinkie, but I'm glad it helped you with your playing. Jeeves Tones and myself among others have been advocating the three-finger technique, and it feels like we've been preaching in the desert. By the way, the pinkie does get used, but sparingly.

I have vowed to give up flogging that particular dead horse, ph. But yes Tom it was clearly a box-playing guardian angel that pushed the amp :-) .
