Re: whistle

Ooops!

Read the post wrongly.

Re: whistle

Now, it really would be worth knowing how to get a *low* B (B,) on an ordinary D whistle!

Re: whistle

You mean lower than this?

I don't think you can.

Re: whistle

I know you can't - that was idle wishful thinking on my part!

But how uncanny it would be if, at a session, somebody did...

Re: whistle

nicholas, I think our posts crossed paths - I hadn't seen your post yet when I clicked reply. ;-) I was replying only to the original post above.

I suppose if you had to play a lower B, you could just get a Low D whistle. Or heck, try an A whistle. :-D

Re: whistle

You might try finding a tube with the same inside diameter as the outside diameter of your tinwhistle. Cut a section of the larger pipe long enough to extend the D whistle down to a low B ( still long enough that it does not slide off the end)
Notch a groove in the front so the lower holes are not obstructed.
Once you have the extension in place tune the whistle to B,
You can play the low note (B,) then a rest while you push the extension against something until the tubes are flush. Play as you always would until you get to the next low B. Take another rest while you slide the tube down with your pinky . . . & repeat.
Or you could buy an expensive keyed flute with everything built into the lower joint.

Re: whistle

Speaking of A whistles can anyone recommend one that is good but not too expensive? I have Burke D and love it but need a low A as well and can't afford a Burke A.

Thanks

Re: whistle

My SO requested a Susato A for a recent present. It's perfectly acceptable, and absolutely in tune, but has a smallish bore, so it lacks some of that lovely 'low whistle' tone.
But certainly not too expensive.

Re: whistle

I have an Alba low A and like it. I am sure other whistles are good too though I don't have experience of any other A whistles. Try Chiff and Fipple for whistle discussions.

Re: whistle

Re the original question - what do you mean, "etc"?

Re: whistle

You can cover all the holes and then halfway cover the bell to get a B on a recorder... (ducks in cover)

Re: whistle

Susato make a wide bore A whistle as well asthe narrow bore version. The wider bored whistle is a joy to play!

Re: whistle

Ah, Hobgoblin only had one, and a narrow-bore one at that, when I had to deal with the request.
