Stage clip Mic for bagpipe: dynamic or condencer? AKG/Sennheiser?

Stage clip Mic for bagpipe: dynamic or condencer? AKG/Sennheiser?

Please share your experience for the subject.

We need to amplifier 2 bagpipes - Bulgarean and Galician - with clip mics on chanters (and m.b. drones) on club stages, in a big band (6-7 members) with percussion.

Choosing between condencer mics like AKG C 519 ML and dynamic ones like SENNHEISER E608

What could be the best solution on the sound and feedback situation?

Please no "I suppose"s - I also suppose something but am interested in real experience.

One detail: the clubs here in Russia often have rather poor equipment and bad acoustic conditions. So we have some monitoring troubles usually.

The best bag pipe amplification I've heard uses piezo pickups stuck right onto the reeds, Zero feedback, zero crossover

the old Lavalier mics- "lapel" mics as they're called

Shure SM98.

Llig, what do you mean by straight onto the reeds?

I use a AKG C3000 for the chanter/regs and a second AKG C1000 just for the drones.

It's a little transducer thing, Barcus Berry made terrific ones a while ago. I little thing maybe 2mm x 4mm with a wire coming out of it. It sticks directly to one side of the double reed on the chanter with this stuff that's a bit like blue tack but is non corrosive. Amazingly, it doesn't effect the sound. You can plug it into a pre-amp and then into your PA, Or it works great just straight into a decent guitar combo

Who would want to put mics on bagpipes? They're already deafening...

Wow. It's something new for me - a tranducers

With condencer mics - but is it a big band with drums? We really have a lot of pain with sound systems here

no, that's an actual microphone. It works OK on a sax because most of the noise comes out of the bell. But with the pipes, the noise comes out of every hole. There's a track on the bothy band live album where all you can hear is the first octave back D on the pipes. The mike is obviously placed a little to the back of the chanter where that note comes out of the thumb hole.

Unfortunately, Barcus Berry no longer make the pickup I'm talking about. I first saw it on Davy Spillane's chanter. He took the brass top off to show us and there it was, stuck right on to the reed, with the wire going underneath the hemp binding. My mate I was playing in a band with at the time got one straight away and it was a revelation. He plugged it straight into his peavy bandit and it was brilliant. I had a very similar Barcus Berry piezo on my fiddle, plugged straight into my peavy reno. Flippin heck we were noisy. My mate still uses the same pick up, and recently he managed to get a spare on e-bay
