Fleadh Cheoil 2009

Fleadh Cheoil 2009

Does anyone know the dates for the all Ireland fleadh 2009, I had heard that the dates might be changed?

Re: Fleadh Cheoil 2009

The last UK bank holiday weekend!
It's not a holiday in Ireland.

Re: Fleadh Cheoil 2009

This was discussed some days ago but I'll repeat what I've heard. It's 99% certain to be Tullamore again and also the earlier weekend of 21 to 23 August rather than the last one. The earlier dates are to accommodate the Irish education system as most schools here now re-open towards the end of August. This will be confirmed at the TionĂ³l Leo Rowsome in Monkstown on Saturday, 13 September so keep watching the Comhaltas space!

Re: Fleadh Cheoil 2009

I hope they will also accommodate the thousands of people from Northern Ireland and Britain who take advantage of the UK bank holiday and have been great supporters of the All Ireland through the years.

Re: Fleadh Cheoil 2009

Tullamore town council has to stump up a lot to pay for the event and with the downturn in the Irish economy they're being cautious about the commitment. My hope is that they move it as far from the north as possible (Bantry or back to Listowel even), because I spent the weekend in the Charleville estate surrounded by drunken foul-mouthed chavs from Tyrone, Armagh and Derry. I was directed to camp in the 'family area' with a few other families (from Britain and France) and by Sunday morning we were all heading out of the place faster than a rat up a drainpipe. It was lawless...and potentially will lead to a serious health and safety incident if the excesses are not reigned in.

Too right mickyfong. Having always found the Fleadh camp-site handy for ready accomodation, the particular elements you mentioned have been cropping up regularly at the last few Fleadh's. Pity.
Don't think there is much the organisers can do.

Re: Fleadh Cheoil 2009

Well I wrote them (Comhaltas) a letter on sunday morning having not slept the night before where I stated that inviting families into this environment was shameful. I was told there would be a response but I have heard nothing yet. The frightening thing was a bunch of drunken twenty somethings (girls) from the north driving around drunk within 8 feet of the tent where my daughter was sleeping. I'm tempted to write into the Tullamore newpaper to expose this but I won't be letting the matter go until someone acknowledges the issues for myself and the other families who left early. The verbal abuse I got from Frida, Breda and Blatheen (from Armagh I reckon) was a bit over the top. They weren't there for the trad music as all I could hear was a song called American Girl being sung at full voice at 4.30 a.m. I think it was country and western...the guy on the gate was very receptive to my plight but couldn't do anything. One of the other families said they weren't going to do anything as he had been stabbed back in England for a similar confrontation. It is at its most fundamental a potential fatality waiting to happen and I don't want that on my conscience. Hence my persistence in badgering the organising committee.

Re: Fleadh Cheoil 2009

I feel for you micky, I really do. A lot of fleadh goers these days aren't there for the music, which is a shame - and I would like to point out that they are not all from the north - they'd be better off at Oxygen or the likes.
However, if you have a young family, why didn't you bring them to the Family campsite in the first place?
