The death has occurred of the Belfast film-maker, folklorist, broadcaster, song collector and traditional singer David Hammond. He will be sorely missed.
Funeral 1pm Thursday 28th St Finian's CoI Belfast.
He played in Room to Rhyme with Heaney and Longley in the '60's. He was great craic.
I loved his lp 'The Singer's House' with Donal Lunny during the eighties, I picked up another, older one at the time for a fiver. Gentle music.
A nice little video of him singing Master McGrath with Donal Lunny, Arty McGlynn and (just sittign there doing nothing) Liam O Flynn: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ibkNw3Y58pc
'The Singer's House' : David Hammond with Donal Lunny, Mulligan, 1978. - LUNA336
Hammond sings and plays guitar, Lunny plays the blarge (I remember it as the first outing of the big bouzouki) and hamonium, they have help from Lonan Byrne (pipes), Kevin Burke and Jackie Daly on a few tracks.
The lp is named after Seamus Heaney's poem, Heaney also wrote the sleeve notes.
the other one I have is
David Hammond sings Songs from Ireland, Request records, SRLP 8061no year on it but from the sixties I would think, it's just himself singing and playing guitar here.
Sad to learn of David's passing - a great singer and a wonderful broadcaster.
The two albums referred to above are never likely to see the light of day as CDs, but the Tradition label did reissue his 1959 LP 'I Am the Wee Falorie Man' as a CD in the 1990s and secondhand copies are available on Amazon.
He was a lovely guy. This determination is based solely on listening to radio broadcasts of recordings of him singing "B For Barney" and "My Aunt Jane", twenty or so years ago, here in San Jose. Some of you folks got to go hear him in person!
David Hammond RIP

Re: David Hammond RIP
Pardon my fractured syntax. I don't know that he ever traveled far from Belfast, let alone visited San Jose. Would've loved it if he had!
