how to turn your iPhone into an mp3 recorder

how to turn your iPhone into an mp3 recorder

OK, this is just insanely cool, & really sorry to geek out here.

I have the original iPhone, so assume it flies with the next gen.

First I upgraded that software, like 2.0 or whatever so there is an Apps icon on the iPhone desktop - that took about 45 minutes. Search under Apps for 'recorder' -- there are many. I downloaded 'Audio Recorder' on the recommendation of an Apple Genius at the store - it costs $2.99 (USD), billed to your iTunes account, that's IT. He recommended this one over others b/c it allows you to EMAIL the recording, to yourself or whatever.

So I tested it tonight at a session. It rocks. The interface is totally user-friendly. Once you finish recording the tune, it actually allows you to NAME your track, ie the little keyboard pops up so you type it in. If you have multiple tracks, it actually alphabetizes them, ha! (The default is the time & date it was recorded.)

When I emailed myself a tune, when I opened my email at home on my MacBook, somehow it automatically opened in the Amazing Slow Downer, so that was wild. I'm sure it's easy from there to import to iTunes, but whatever. I wasn't on Wi-Fi, so it took a long time to email.... The speaker phone (ie for playback) on the original iPhone is pretty crappy even for phone calls (I hear it's better on next gen), but when you play it through a computer with good speakers, it's really good.

What is also ridiculously cool is I have that car phone charger that plays your iPhone through the car stereo via an available radio station & was able to hear that night's session while driving. (Will also allow you to still receive calls, haha!)

I'm sorry I don't have more specifics ie clipping or geeked out sound quality questions, & I'm going camping for a week, so if there are any questions or comments, I'm afraid I won't be able to respond til the weekend at the earliest, but I just had to let youse guys know how cool this. I bet Reverend will have something to add!!! ;)

In the interests of commercial balance, I have to say you can do much the same (and have been able to for some years) with Nokia smartphones, and probably some of the other brands too.

Then you can email it, bluetooth it, multimedia text it, infra-red it, blog it ... Apple's got a bit of catching up to do this side of the pond I think
