Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

Three times today, I've wanted to do a google search for a tune or artist mentioned in a thread, but when I place my pointer at the start of the name, left click, and try to highlight the word, every bit of text up to *but not including* the name winds up highlighted. I can't seem to do anything to highlight just the name on the page. I have to go to the menu bar and click "View>>Source", then try to find the text I want buried amongst the page code, message, and replies.

Just venting, really. Thanks for listening, and feel free to tell me I'm a horrible person for not being anything but grateful for the free service this website provides.

Re: Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

It's a function of your web browser, and not the site. I don't have any issues like that. What browser are you using? It must be having issues with either the css or the <div> tags.

Have you tried double clicking in the middle of the word, to highlight it?

Re: Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

IE version six, I spit at thee. Sadly, at work I don't have any control over the browser I use. Double clicking in the middle of the word works, but doesn't help much when I want to highlight more than one word. Which would be most tune titles and names.
Now I wonder why I have no problem on some sites that use css, but others I have to go poking around in the source code.

Re: Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

If you're using IE, try triple clicking the paragraph.
Or another solution, if you're using IE, is to switch to Firefox ;)

Re: Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

actually, fiftymission, you only read about half of the thread, too. ;-) Hotsauce has pointed out that it's on a work computer, and switching browsers is not an option...

Hotsauce, you could always ask your boss how s/he selects text on non-work related web sites during business hours....

Re: Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

Here's the workaround in IE:
- Ctrl+A (to select the whole page)
- Open Notepad (or other text editor)
- Ctrl+V (to paste into Notepad)
- Select the bit you need from Notepad ...

Re: Why is it so difficult to select text on this site?

The Firefox browser has been mentioned as being easy for selecting text. So also is Opera (I think it uses the same engine as Firefox), and Apple's Safari (possibly the fastest browser around).

The only problem I have with Safari is trying to access its cache, which is useful to be able to do when downloading streaming video or audio off Youtube and the like. Safari enables the user to clear the cache, but that's all - there doesn't seem to be any other information about where the cache is stored. So I can't even identify where the Safari cache is hidden, despite doing a detailed search which included the hidden and system files. Any ideas, anybody?

Lazyhound, I use RealPlayer as my default for .flv files. Whenever I view a YouTube video a little taskbar pops up above it saying "download this video?"

You can set options in RealPlayer to download anywhere you like and it's easy to find. Don't know if it would work with Safari though.
