Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

You know, just for the record, I did tell that guy it was an Irish Music Session. ;-)

"At the Celtic Ray pub, regulars gathered for the weekly Celtic jam session and to put off preparing for Fay."

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Looks like a mighty nice pint of stout there too Ian ... I wouldnt be rushing away from any hurricane either until I had that pint taken care of. ;-)

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Darn straight! We're not leaving until the tunes are played and the pints are gone!

Well SS, according to my ex-wife, I already am... [bud doom, crash!] No, but seriously folks...

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

I should have been, Cathy! HA!

No, I think it was "The Wind That Shakes The Palm Trees".

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Hey nice shot SWFL! (Didn't Nero fiddle while Rome burned? ;-) I'm very glad Fay fizzled out. Nothing puts a damper on a session like a Cat-5 storm.

It looks like you're playing the Rolling Wave there - nice storm tune.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

- PS -
I had heard George Steinbrenner sent that storm to derail the Rays in their quest to crush the Yankees in the ALE pennant race - I'm glad it didn't pan out (much like the A-Rod / Madonna fiasco)

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Good luck, Ian, I hope you survive :-) but then, look what's due to happen to Florida....

And I figured you were playing http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1004

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Thank you all, we survived just fine. I believe a neighbor had a trash can blow away, that was about the extent of the damage in my neck of the woods. ;-)

Honestly, I didn't even bother putting up the storm shutters. We've had worse thunderstorms recently. Lots of media hype, very little actual storm going on.

Thanks Rev, between you and Cathy we've got a whole storm tune collection!

Jusa, I'm originally from New Hampshire, so I'm all about hating the Yankees. Red Sox fans blame everything on Steinbrenner.

Global warming too, wolfbird! It's all Steinbrenner's fault!

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

What happened to the sound :-( ? I thought it was a utube clip.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Sorry Dave! It sounded sorta like this: "WHOOSH! Splatter splatter splatter...WHOOSH!"

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

It is possible to be a prick without being arrogant about it.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

SWFL- The news coverage other than Fay is slow because people have caught on that the Olympics are digitally made-for-TV and stopped watching, the conventions are next week, and everyone is already sick of McCain's attack ads!

So they got you and you backer!

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

HA! ...and the poor guys didn't even have a story! They were so forlorn when they came into the pub. They had come down looking for people freaking out, and here we are sitting in the pub cranking out tunes and having pints.

Oh well, they had a nice lunch and got a story anyway, got some nice music too, if I do says so meself. ;-)

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

How can someone be decapitated by a tree? Even if it's bowling along at 100 miles an hour?

Perhaps those in the photo thought they'd be left in uncontested possession of the pub's provender if the superstructure blew away.

Or maybe they thought that if they got drunk enough, the hurricane kinda wouldn't notice them: not so much out of sight, out of mind as out of mind, out of sight.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

SWFL, in the style of our president, I can offer you no more than rhetorical aid, and nice sentiments. Hope you're OK. Wish there was a way to exchange some of our fire for some of your water. All the best.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

nicholas, I have seen pictures of boaardsdriven through trees by strong winds, when winds get up above 70 knots, amazing and frightening things begin to happen. You cannot take a hurricane too seriously. But given that Fay was a relatively mild event, the type where the most severe conditions are the hype the media try to whip up, SWFL was behaving in an extremely rational manner.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Hear hear, thank you Al, and thank you At, perhaps we could have a element exchange, water for fire? Yes, we are of hardy stock down here. Unless it's a Cat 2 or higher, there's no need to batten down the hatches and board up the windows. Most homes built recently (and there's been a lot!) are up to the highest standards. Categtory 5 windows and garage doors, all the homes are concrete block with rebar, etc.

Also, that particular pub stayed OPEN during Hurrican Charlie a few years back, and Punta Gorda was ground zero for that, it was a Category 4! I still have one of their T Shirts: "The Celtic Ray, Punta Gorda, Florida, Hurricane Charlie, 8/13/04, Never Closed!" I was safely home in my concrete block house with the storm shutters on though, thank you very much!

You live in Florida, you get hurricanes. You live in the midwest, you get tornados, you live in Cali, you get earthquakes, etc. etc. Roll with the punches! ;-)

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Would any of you like to move to Arkansas? We have tornadoes, forest fires, and earthquakes (the New Madrid fault) but no hurricanes.

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

There you go! Case in point, it's always something, right fauxcelt?

# Posted on August 21st 2008 by SWFL Fiddler

Re: Man Fiddles While Storm Bears Down

Yes, I guess we are just living on the wrong planet. We need to move to a planet which isn't tilted quite so far off its axis.
