danny o'connell fiddler

danny o'connell fiddler

There was a superb recording of a Canadian fiddler Danny O'Connell played on Clare FM by Joan Hanraghan on 7/7/08 and introduced by Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin. Does anyone know where you could get a copy of this?

Try these folks, they will usually chase up something for you if it isn't in stock ~ good people, at least I've had good and fair responses from them ~

Niall
you might try asking Paul Cranford who is based in Nova Scotia if he knows anything about him....the name doesn't ring a bell, but perhaps he's an east coast fiddler?

paul is a lighthouse keeper, fiddler, composer and distributor of east coast trad and irish trad music etc.Based in Cape Breton.

Re: danny o'connell fiddler

If I recall the interview correctly, Gearoid was talking about Irish music in the Ottawa Valley.

I did a little hunting around and found that he was born in 1980, committed suicide in 2004, and made one CD, called "Green Fields of the Valley". He was a student of Denis Lanctot for five years. He played fiddle with Gilles Roy and the Stepping Ambassadors. I didn't find a source for the album, though.

Re: danny o'connell fiddler

They did mention one album called L'Irlande en Quebecque. I tried doing a search but got nowhere.

Re: danny o'connell fiddler

GaryAMartin has all the facts right... he did some sweet Irish things on his "Green Fields..." cd. Wonderful singing tone and command of the bow His early passing is a stark testament to the really big downside of prescribed SSRI's to combat depression. Big heart, big talent, big loss. RIP Danny. You can obtain copies of his cd from family members, I believe.

Re: danny o'connell fiddler

The Ottawa Folklore Centre had a copy of Danny's cd the last time I was there. Their website address is http://www.ottawafolklore.com/.

Danny was a regular at our sessions and he is missed.

One of Danny's young friends a fiddler named Matt Papin is making quite a name for himself as a great Ottawa Valley fiddlier.

If anyone has the details for the album it would be a welcome addition to the recordings here...

Re: danny o'connell fiddler

I did not know Danny O'Connell personally but he is remembered here in Ottawa. His CD Green Fields in the Valley straddles two styles, Old Time Ottawa Valley Fiddle and Irish Fiddle. It is available on CD at the Ottawa Folklore Centre. I think it was also produced as a cassette tape. If you play the front side it is Old Time, the back side is Irish.

Danny O'Connell played a fiddle made by Dennis Alexander in Alymer Quebec, just across the river from Ottawa. Dennis made a CD featuring the great fiddle players who play his instruments. That CD is called "Dennis the Fiddle Maker". It has two tracks by Danny O'Connell as well as tracks by Dennis Lanctot, Pierre Schryer, Terri-Lynn Mahusky, Bruce Armitage and others, all of whom played their Dennis Alexander fiddles for the recording. This CD is a great overview of Ottawa Valley fiddle music.

Danny's friend is Matt Pepin, not Pepan as mentioned above. Matt is a rising star in Ottawa and has a CD titled "Pass It Down". Available at the Ottawa Folklore Centre, CD Baby, or iTunes.

Re: danny o'connell fiddler

Very industrious people you are, everything here is pretty much on the money. Danny actually made a couple of cassette tapes in his early teens, but are now out of print. Niall, if you would kindly send me your address, I'll send off a copy of green fields for you. Sorry it took so long
