There was a time - not so long ago - when it was possible to read almost anything on the session and make a contribution here and there without spending at least 25 hours a day behind the computer screen . Those days are over, for me at least.
I've been around here almost daily for some six years now I guess, not even reached 600 comments so far and if I try to estimate I think I still spend some 15-20 minutes daily on this site (long term average). Which makes me wonder how much time the top ten contributors must spend daily - must be a full time job or so. How is it possible to match that with job, family, making music (!).
I have noticed though that all of these 'top ten' members have English as a native language. That certainly must be helpful, it always takes extra time for me to put it down in somewhat understandable English.
Oh yes, absolutely no negative implications meant, just curious.
Lurked for a while, started posting 2006. I just have the RSS feed marked with other sites I like. At work, when there's a down moment, I check stuff out, keep up with the news. This site is a joy compared to the current affairs and financial ones on my RSS. It keeps things in perspective reading debates about music as opposed to economics or politics, man can not live on bread alone and all that.
Starting posting in 2006. Check in once or twice a day when the daily grind gets overwhelming.
10 to fifteen minutes some days, 3 to 4 minutes on a slow posting day or when the discussions are really innocuous (it happens once in a while!) or discuss things I don't have access to (discussions of things going on real time in Ireland or UK or Australia, that being in the US I have no hope of participating in) unless I can vicariously enjoy things.
If I have a post on something I have going I might be on f4 or 5 times a day.
IT is a good ITM resource (actually for music things in general since some of the players are accomplished in other things than ITM) and some friendly, helpful people. Even Ilig
How much time I spend on this web site depends on what is being discussed and how busy I am both at work and at home.
If the topics under discussion are something with which I am familiar and that I feel as if I can contribute something useful to, I will spend more time here.
Then there are the times when I am unable to resist the temptation to make a comment which is completely silly, ridiculous, and doesn't move the conversation forward at all.
Originally I only used the "Tunes" & "Recordings" tabs. Finally one day I was posting a tune.
Before you could say, "What the?" I received some instant criticism. The experience turned out great. But it did curb my enthusiasm for posting tunes.Ironic since 'the exchange of tunes' is what drew me to the site.
That forced me to rethink the purpose of thesession.org
I continue to look for meaning & purpose in the discussions. I love it when it happens. Hate it when I make the 2nd comment on a thread, come back the next day & it has been deleted. There are some great members before you ~ a few aging teenagers but overall a better mix of personalities than you could ever meet in a session. So it is worth some time. Real music sessioning is how I send my best times though.
I've been around since maybe 2003. I follow certain threads fairly closely, and since I work on computers all day, it's a nice break from time to time. But I wouldn't say I spend more than maybe an hour a day, total, on the website... And on weekends, it's often zero time.
It really has been over seven years now. I was offline for about a month when the mustard change took place. Before the site became incarnated in its present form I used to come and check it out once a week and then as the volume of material increased I was in and out more and more often. Now I check the site every day and maybe twice. If nothing of much relevance to me I might only spend 10 minutes but other times I might spend an hour reading an entertaining discussion.
I do find the resource useful but there are less useful discussions now as compared to 3-5 yrs ago (as far as I am concerned)
I think I started posting about the end of 2004, start of 2005. I never used to use it much. Now, I check it most days. If I'm not busy with other things, I will check it 2 or 3 times.
The discussion area isn't the main area I lurk in though. I usually check all the sections, scanning through to see if anything catches my eye. Then, I might spend more than an hour in the tunes section looking at different versions, approaches and general inside information. I avoid learning tunes from the website 99% of the time but I do like to refer to it. And that reference might take over an hour on some days.
Like Donough, I also spend some days reading just one discussion for ages. I am glad to see though that my number of comments is still 'sane' compared to the guys in the top 10 (and probably top 50 even!)
How's that, Random? Nuke it and start over from scratch?
Part of the reason the discussions aren't as useful as they used to be is because just about every nuance of every single thing even remotely related to Irish music has already been discussed on this site...
The other part of it is because 3-5 years ago, we had 3-5 years less experience, and know we "know it all"
Sometimes I go months without posting and sometimes I go months posting daily. Its kinda hard when everything has already been talked about a million time But we've such a small trad scene here that if I didnt spend time on here I think i'd go a bit mad.
At least an hour a day. Time well spent. I check it several times during the day, too. I work on the net all my life it seems, and alt-tabbing is effortless.
Lately, I've been lurking about, guffawing loudly at the different funny comments, and in general, spending somewhere around an hour or so a day reading the "mustard board". There has been some valuable information, of which I have been very grateful for, on this site!
Pete,
You're right about everything having been discussed exhaustively, but new members join all the time and the information is still timely. Even when we joke about bodhrans or argue dots vs. ears, valuable information gets passed along. In the four years I've been here, the membership has more than doubled. Those old discussions (and arguments) are still very useful.
A few minutes daily, unless there's an entertaining discussion. Then I might spend an hour or two participating.
I honestly don't remember when I first started lurking here--someone else whose number is close to 17000 might know. I obviously don't post much being that this post is my 275th offering...
I go in spurts. Sometimes these spurts can last for six months.
I find myself verbalising a lot of stuff that should remain unverbalised ( for reasons of pure self interest ) . Damn I wished I hadn't verbalised that! I can't play any instruments anymore because I have sold my soul to this site and would far
prefer to spend my time (i) creating an illusion that I know what
I'm talking about, and (ii) being outraged at other people doing the same..............................and loving it!
bb Cruella de vil, since it takes a certain type of insanity to not only be willing to spend a lot of time practicing music and to want to spend a lot of time practicing, you are probably already more than a "bit mad" if you are like most musicians.
I get some teasing from people because I have made the mistake of telling them that I enjoy spending my free time slaving over a cold piano.

Too true Pete.Having not been around in the early days I find thesession useful. Notwithstanding the grand early discussions. Then it grew & things got complicated. I doubt Jeremy & others' kmew just how much it was destined to grow.
I do no real solution. Just a gut feeling there continues to be something useful here ~ though rare on the forum & not always obvious.
My wish is that the curiousity, respect, trust, & humor in traditional music continue.Definitely in sessions & hopefully here.
See you in the fallout shelter.. .
