Well, I have often said in a off handish manner that I never saw a shaky egg player at a session in my life, but I have now.
For the first time since 1974 I was in Spanish Point and headed down to the Belbridge on Thursday night.
I had come down for "Willie Week" at the famed Miltown. And right in the middle of the session a shaky egg player.
Milton, home of traditional music? Do they have shaky egg classes? Never ever ever saw one before. Had to go to "Willie Week" to experince a shaky egg player.
And you know what? You actually found yourself listening to this egg after a bit. This bloke was doing triplets and all sorts, on a shaky egg.
So I suppose Milton can claim to have the best shaky egg player in the world, this bloke was a maestro.
Reminds me of two English guys from near Sheffield who were coming over. They couldn't remember the name of the place very well so we told them to ask directions to Melton Mowbray once they made it to Clare.
The reason there is not a long history of shaky egg in trad is that up to a couple of hundred years ago you could cut someones hand of and expect to get away with it.
Do shaky eggs have a "mute" button...if not, they certainly should...there was actually a guy out in Miltown Malbay selling shaky eggs held between wooden spoon contraptions (doubly irritating), and yet another selling slide whistles (which, fortunately, failed to make it onto the session scene)...eggs should stay on the farm or in the womb, not out at sessions...
Milton Malbay-Home of the Shaky Egg.

So maybe all the stuff about Clare is true.

Re: Milton Malbay-Home of the Shaky Egg.
Has not Tommy Hayes himself deployed the shaky egg? Not that I'm an advocate, mind you.

Where's 'Milton Malbay'? Is that the place that makes the pies?

I've never been to Willie Week (been to Milton Malbay "off season") but that seals it. I'm never going.

Just be careful not to sit on it, or a Welsh Elvis might pop out.

I just happen to be the Milton Malbay-Home of the Shaky Egg President.
Remember that I'm not only the president....
I'm also a member.

Re: Milton Malbay-Home of the Shaky Egg.
I can confirm that i was in Bliss's entourage at Milton Malbay and a participant in the same session at the Belbridge.
The young lad was actually the best shakey-egg player in the world!

"They couldn't remember the name of the place very well so we told them to ask directions to Melton Mowbray once they made it to Clare."
I wonder how many people turn up in Milltown, mystified by the lack of pork pies and stilton.

Re: Milton Malbay-Home of the Shaky Egg.
Thank you for your support Mr Llig.
Seriously though, the three days were brilliant, literally hundreds of talented musicians, many of them young, playing through the day and night.
Well worth a visit.

We saw those shakey egg-spoons contraptions and thought we should buy one and send it to Llig Leachim.

"Where's 'Milton Malbay'? Is that the place that makes the pies?"
true easy mistake to make, one is the home of trad music in Clare, the other...the home of pork pies
