Wimpy Fiddles

Wimpy Fiddles

Whats with all this nicey nicey stuff with fiddles latelY? Whats this dark tone crap? This softy softy gut sound is wrenching my gut... its like my addiction to chiles... I NEED I NEED I NEED to hear that treble instrument speak! And this groovy woovy garbage... what in hell is this computer mimicing jazzy flat lined heart monitor stuff that sounds like a midi mcgoldrick poisoning my brain? Take your suzuki classic gut stringed eco-polluter and throw it in the river and pee on it.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Actually, I need to read what you said more closely, I just felt like yelling along with ya. One sec.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

OK, I still don't get it, sorry man. You got examples of what you don't like? The whole Celtic New Age thing?

# Posted on June 27th 2008 by SWFL Fiddler

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

I think that was worth reading just for the literary content. It's like Burns or Chaucer though - great fun to read, but no idea what it means...

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Wow! Is there anything you DO like?

# Posted on June 27th 2008 by davydd

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

I believe in the second line he mentions an addiction to chiles. I guess that could qualify as a "like".

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

We had a French teacher at school named McCracken. He too had a very similar command of language when cussing us little morons he was trying to teach French to. In today's wimpy teaching environment he would have been fired.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

There are times that Ive listened to Kevin Burke or Johnny Doran and enter the most pleasnt mental state... when Kevin saws down on his e string without fear, I am taken to a higher place... when the pipes flow like river through the hills, that's when i am at peace.... they don't teach that in suzuki... its hum drum-- 1234--- beats that are enough to strangle any dog... no soul, no lilt, no smell o fthe turf or flesh and blood... just modernmcgoldrickedmidi sh*t that is like bad wall paper stinking up a once inhabitable space.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Ah, those were the days :-)

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Funny you should mention Mr Burke - he has an antiseptic sound now -
just like what you're complaining about. That's based on the only time
I've heard him live - promoting a recent album.

it probably depends on the gig too what approach he takes.

I don't mean to bash the great man - rather I'm trying to get you to better define what it is that you don't like?

I'll bet you _hate_ Renegade (Sharon Shannon's new outfit)

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Each to their own i guess... there are a lot of members here that would consider Kevin's playing along the same line as McGoldrick.

Don't get me wrong... I love Kevins playing... but would much prefer to listen to players like Siobhan Peoples, Jesse Smith or Paul O'Shaughnessy for that raw passion you're looking for.

:o)

Ah Hup... you beat me to it!

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

If it makes you feel any better, I just switched from gut to evahs. I'm very happy to know that I'm still bucking the trend.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Ah, I gotcha, you want the the dirt, the grime, aka 'raw passion', I hear ya. Didn't someone have a thread recently about bringing he nasty back?

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

And I'm currently using heavy Helicores on one of my fiddles. It seems to be the best way to get through 4 or 5 boxes going at full throttle in my English session :-)

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Love your prosaic style McCracken but I do feel you may need a hug.

I second that.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Wow, 'hound - a man of extremes!. The next stage is spirocore heavies
with a hidden wireless mike in your fiddle and a Marshall amp under the
table.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

mccracken, have you ever heard brian rooney? i think hey has the scratchiest, tinniest, most wonderful sound i have ever heard on a fiddle.

http://www.claddaghrecords.com/www/music/mp3/spin1004/spin1004trk1.mp3

he has even tinnier tracks, too.

is this what you want, mr mc c?

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

You know, I think that the too-clean sound in recordings can often be blamed on reverb/echo rather than the fiddler. I don't like that stuff in trad recordings.

Sometimes sound engineers don't know when to leave well enough alone. Classical violin sounds great that way but it's not so good for fiddles.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Play loud!
I do dislike the skittery fiddle style that just sketches things in, and depends almost totally on amplification to be heard.

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Wimpy fiddles?
What, like, does it have spicy beanburgers with cheese on top?
Or is it made by the Wimpy construction firm? Is it made out of MDF?

Re: Wimpy Fiddles

Fiddle is not "pretty". If you're sacrificing volume and rhythm to sound "pretty" you're missing the point. Maybe you need to put down the fiddle for a while, meet an attractive member of whatever gender you prefer, have a torrid but ultimately futile affair, drink more than is good for you, spend some time in the countryside alone...maybe you'll start to get where fiddle sound, real fiddle sound comes from. They don't teach it in conservatories.

I wouldn't. I've done it, it's crap. I recommend be lazy and squander your life away by coming on here and writing a load of sh!te. Better fun.
