NOT AGAIN!!!.......fiddle strings?......

I know you've heard this time and time again so I apologise now but I need a little advice regarding fiddle strings? I bought an 18c german fiddle last year and it already had a set of steel? strings on it, not quite sure of the name. These were great while they lasted but I had to change them a few days ago.( I know, they should have been changed sooner but im student with v little money!) Anyhoo, I fitted a set of dominants on it and can I hell as get used to them!! The strings feel sooo wide and I also have a massive fear of tuning with the pegs too as im no good at this but the guy in the shop said id have to get used to it as these strings expand lots??...is this true?.....
Tips and hints desperatly needed!!!!
Cheers

Re: NOT AGAIN!!!.......fiddle strings?......

Assuming you're talking about the usual medium tension Dominants, you should find the nylon cores stabilise within about a week. Thereafter you should find them very stable, and any tuning can normally be carried out using the fine tuners. (Use tuning pipes or a chromatic tuner). There are ways to shorten this settling in period, but the string life is reduced as a result. In this respect, Dominants are not significantly worse than comparable strings of similar construction from other manufacturers.
If your fear of peg tuning relates mainly to the E string, try using glasses / shades. They won't protect your pocket but will protect your eyes if you overdo it. Use graphite (soft lead pencil or similar) on the bridge and nut string grooves to aid lubrication. Also keep the strings clean. (Resin, sweat - sorry, perspiration etc).
Alternatively if you can't get used to the width don't bother. Although they're the most widely sold fiddle strings, the spiral windings of Dominants are notorious for unwinding after a number of hard sessions or lack of maintenance.
